The Reserve Junior Champion Brackan Major scooped the top price at Roscommon show and Sale, held in Roscommon mart on Saturday 19th May. The sale had a clearance rate of 73% of the bulls presented with an average price of €2,951. Brackan Major was presented at the show and sale by his breeder Padraig Gormley, Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim. Born in February 2017, this young bull is a son of Ampertaine Gigolo and Esker-Hill Jacintha Et. With five-star ratings in many traits, Major was purchased by Joe Kelly, Dromard, Co. Sligo for €5,000.
From the same line-up and claiming the Junior Champion was Milbrook Miner from the renowned Milbrook herd of William Smith, Oldcastle, Co. Meath. Miner is steeped in Milbrook genetics – his sire is the home-bred Milbrook Itchyballs, while his dam Milbrook Elisa has Cloughhead Lord and Greensons Gigolo in her lineage. Miner has five-star ratings in almost every trait. He was purchased for €4,100 by Colin Irwin, Tynan, Co. Armagh.
William Smith also bred the Senior Champion Milbrook L 222 also a son of Milbrook Itchyballs. L 222’s dam is the Fieldson Alfy daughter Milbrook Gentle. L 22 also boasts an array of five-star ratings. Eighteen-month-old L 222 was purchased by Kieran Coone, Loughrea, Co. Galway for €4,000.
Second prize winner Lennon Luigi changed hands for €4,000. Luigi has Kaprico Eravelle, Wilodge Cerberus and Lino in his sire stack. August 2016 born Luigi has five star ratings in many traits. Luigi was bred by Patrick Sweeny, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. He was purchased by John Gavin, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath.
Michael and Noel Ruthledge, Ballina, Co. Mayo accepted €3,700 for Rutland Lucas. Born in September 2016, Lucas has Elderberry Galahad, Queenshead Altea and Ampertaine Commander in his lineage. Lucas, a fourth prize winner, was purchased by John Moore, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway.
At the same selling price was the Reserve Senior Champion Millburn Lismore from Tuam, Co. Galway breeder Richard O’Beirne. Lismore is a son of Ampertaine Foreman and the Ionesco dam Thomastown Ena. Lismore was purchased by Martin O’Malley, Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo for €3,700.
A Ronick Hawk son Portauns Limited Edition sold for €3,600. Born in October 2016 Limited Edition’s dam Dunmore Amy has Ideal 23 and Heros in her sire stack. Limited Edition was bred in Kilmallock, Co. Limerick by Laurance Lynch. He was acquired by Larry Prendiville, Killucan, Co. Westmeath.
Gearoid & Padraic Kennedy, Portlaoise, Co. Laois presented third prize winner Coolrain Lenard. Lenard is a son of Kennedy’s stock bull Drummin Goliath (a Wilodge Vantastic son) and Coolrain Edie Mchawk (a Ronick hawk grand-daughter). A Swinford county Mayo based farmer purchased Lenard for €3,500.
John Flood, Kells, Co. Meath purchased Millburn Lewis for €3,400. Lewis is a son of Gamin and the Mas Du Clo dam Millburn Emma Et. Third prize winning Lewis was bred in Tuam by Richard O’Beirne.
Ohill Mcgregor sold for €3,400. Mcgregor was bred in Mohill, Co. Leitrim by Patrick Beirne. His pedigree includes Ampertaine Gigolo, Wilodge Cerberus and Mas Du Clo. Mcgregor, a third prize winner, was purchased by Peter Keaveney, Castlerea, Co. Galway.
Ballykilroe Magic Mike found a new home at €3,300. First prize winner Magic Mike was bred by Tommy Claffey, Ballinagore, Co. Westmeath. Magic Mike is a son of Wilodge Cerberus and Broomfield Fruits, a Louxor daughter. Magic Mike was purchased by Peter Keaveney, Williamstown, Co. Galway.
The third prize winning Ampertaine Commander son Boyanagh Major sold for €3.100. Major was bred by Mary Tarpey, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. His dam is the Haltcliffe Dancer daughter Boyanagh Jasmin. County Offaly based Patrick Dalton purchased Major.
Montclare Macgregor, a blue rosette winner sold for €3,100. Macgregor is a son of Ampertaine Foreman and Baile Na Gartig Dana, a Navarin daughter. Macgregor was bred by Michael Montgomery, Quilty, Co. Clare, he was purchased by Joe Lowney, Beara, Co. Cork.
First prize winner Cappahugh Luka was purchased by Nevil Horsman, Eyrescourt, Co. Galway from his breeder Margaret Henson, Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath. Luka is a son of Brooklands F0959. His selling price was €3,000.
The second bull offered for sale by Gearoid and Padraic Kennedy realised a price of €3,000. Coolrain Luke has Ampertaine Commander, Ronick Hawk and Haricot in his sire stack. Luke was acquired by Colin McFarland, Smithboro, Co. Monaghan.
Also breaching the €3,000 mark was Cross Latino . This November 2016 born bull is a son of Bavardage and the Sympa daughter Cross Herbe. Latino was bred by Tom Feehan, Westport, Co. Mayo, he was purchased by PJ Weir, Ballina, Co. Mayo.
The second prize winning Ronick Hawk son Brooklands Luigi sold for €2,900. Luigi was bred in Enniskeane, Co. Cork by Clive Jennings. His dam Brooklands Cheryl has Mas Du Clo and Litron in her lineage. Luigi was purchased by Jonathan Angland, Oughterard, Co. Galway.
Local suckler farmer Gerry Kelly, Barnhill purchased the On-Dit son Corcamore Lafayette for €2,900. Lafayette was bred in Clarina, Co. Limerick by Brendan Curtin. His dam Corcamore Ursula is a daughter of Gamin (GIA) and Gorvagh Nora.
David Abbott, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan sold Woodview Lance 2 for €2,800. Lance 2 is a son of the homebred Ampertaine Elgin sire Woodview Jason 3 and the Vison daughter Corranhill Isabell. Aiden Donoghue, Athleague, Co. Roscommon purchased third prize winning Lance 2.
Ballinascraw Masterpiece sold for €2,800. Masterpiece was bred by John & Stephen Lynch, Ballinalee, Co. Longford. His sire Ballinascraw Kona is a son of Haltcliffe Gunner. Masterpiece was purchased by John Langan, Tuam, Co. Galway.
Fourth prize winner Bellville Maxwell sold for €2,700 to Denis Barry, Charleville, Co. Cork. Maxwell is a son of Cavelands Jolly and the Sympa dam Bellville Hazel. He was bred by Peter elody, Athenry, Co. Galway.
The youngest bull to sell here in Roscommon was Buckfield Mickey. Mickey is a yearling son of Ampertaine Foreman and the Nenuphar dam Annadale Eureka. Mickey, a first prize winner, was bred by John Moore, Westport, Co. Mayo. He was acquired by Josie Regan, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon for €2,700.
The Ampertaine Elgin son Ammaghmore Leeroy sold for €2,600. Second prize winner Leeroy was bred by Sean Garrett, Ballycastle, Co. Mayo. He was purchased by Vincent Cooney, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.
Margaret Faherty, Moycullen, Co. Galway purchased Corcamore Lemon for €2,550. Lemon is a son of Keltic Handsome. He was bred by Brendan Curtin, Clarina, Co. Limerick.
Laurence Lynch, Kilmallock, Co. Limerick sold Portauns Levi for €2,500. Levi has Ulm, Lino, Saunders Dimitri and Saunders Umar in his sire stack. Levi was acquired by Michael Geraghty, Castlecoote, Co. Roscommon.
Mary Tarpey, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon sold Boyanagh Murt for €2,500. Murt has Ampertaine Foreman, Rocky and Barnhill Harry in his lineage. He was purchased by Martin Mitchell, Williamstown, Co. Galway.

Heifers:
A small number of heifers were on offer at the Show and Sale. Judge PJ Smith awarded the Champion Female rosette to youngest heifer in the class, 14-month old Newtown Martini, from Stanley Richardson, Newtowngore, Co. Leitrim. Martini is a daughter of Kaprico Eravelle. She left the sales ring unsold.
Reserve Champion heifer was the Elite Forever Brill Et daughter Boyanagh Lila. Lila was bred by Mary Tarpey, Castlerea. She also left the ring unsold.

Fourth prize winner Carrowreagh Lulu sold for €2,500. Lulu is a daughter of Haltcliffe Dancer and the Cloughhead Lord dam Carrowreagh Caithlin. Lulu was bred in Elphin, Co. Roscommon by Patrick Bruen. She was purchased by Noel Larkin, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway.
The Wilodge Joskins daughter Woodview Lulu sold for €1,900. Lulu was bred by David Abbott, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan. She was purchased by Marty Conneely, Ballyconneely, Co. Galway having won the third prize rosette in the pre-sale show.
