In recent times, we have seen the popularity of the Limousin-cross heifer suitable for breeding soar in sales up and down the country. In addition, there are now many specialist heifer breeders in the country that use Limousin genetics as the bedrock of the their herds.

‘Monaghan Day’ – the annual heifer and bullock sale – which are held separately every year in Mohill Mart, Co. Leitrim, saw some exceptional prices paid for Limousin-cross heifers purchased for breeding.

Darragh Bardon, the mart’s manager, said: “Monaghan Day in Mohill Mart was excellent; the number of cattle entered was up from 2021 and the quality of the Limousin cattle was super. Those Limousin-cross heifers are making a premium price. We had two exceptional Limousin-cross heifers selling for €3,020 and €2,470 – which was excellent money.

“There was a huge amount of interest around the ring for the Limousin bred heifer; there are now a lot of suckler men around Mohill buying that type of heifer for breeding. In fact, there is a huge amount of Limousin-cross cattle going through the yard each week,” he said.

Darragh notes the reason for this is that suckler farmers in the locality are using a Limousin stock bull on their herds as they a easily calved and have healthy, vigorous at birth.
