Athenry show and sale was held on Thursday 18th April. The sale met with an average price of €4,124 (an increase of €124 on last year’s average) and a clearance rate of 74%.

Judging the sale was Mayo man Neil Lyons. Auctioneer was George Candler. Thanks to the management and staff of Athenry mart, our auctioneer George, judge Neil and the stewards Ann Hester, Archie Lambert, Brid Cronin and Micheal Phillips. Many thanks to all bidders and we wish the successful purchasers the very best with their new stock bulls.

Champion PORTAUNS T JUNCTION – €5,900

Lot 11. Topping the sale was the Champion PORTAUNS T JUNCTION from Limerick breeder John Lynch, Kilmallock. T Junction is an exceptional son of Ewdenvale Ivor, his dam is the homebred Wilodge Joskins daughter Portauns Mystical Lady. T Junction came to the ring with five star ratings in Terminal index, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. A county Galway based purchaser acquired the Champion for €5,900.

LISNA TAZ – €5,700

Lot 42. The striking Tomschoice Lexicon son LISNA TAZ found a new abode at €5,700. Taz’s dam has Ampertaine Foreman and Milbrook Dartangan Et in her lineage. Taz was bred by Ballinasloe, Co. Galway based Dermot Shaughnessy. Multi-starred Taz claimed the 4th prize rosette in his show class.

LOCHANBOY TEMPO – €5,600

Lot 8. Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo breeder John Flanagan accepted €5,600 for LOCHANBOY TEMPO a son of Grenache. Tempo has an array of five star ratings including a Replacement index of €160 and a Terminal index of €143. Tempo’s dam Lochanboy Ree has Moondharrig Knell and Tomschoice Imperial in her sire stack.

Reserve Champion SPRINGVALLEY TEDDY – €5,600

Lot 44. The father and son duo of Martin and Kieran Killeen from Mullagh, Co. Clare exhibited the Reserve Champion SPRINGVALLEY TEDDY. December 2022 born Teddy is an outstanding son of Ampertaine Majestic and the homebred Wilodge Cerberus daughter Springvalley Rosa. Teddy has five star ratings in Terminal index, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. The hammer fell at €5,600 to a Galway based farmer.

RUAN TREVOR – €5,400

Lot 14. The second prize winning Plumtree Fantastic son RUAN TREVOR sold for €5,400. Trevor has five star ratings in almost all traits. Nineteen month old Trevor was bred in county Clare by Sean Lyons.

CAVELANDS TAYLOR – €5,300

Lot 17. €5,300 was top call for CAVELANDS TAYLOR from the herd of Paul Sykes, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo. Taylor was awarded the red rosette in his class. Taylor has Mereside Godolphin, Hamac and Neuf in his sire stack.

Lot 18. The second bull on offer from Sean Lyons was RUAN THEO, a son of Grenache and Ruan Holly (a Pelletstown Excel daughter). Theo was placed third in his class. He boasts five star ratings in Replacement index, Docility, Carcass conformation, Daughter milk and Daughter calving interval. Theo’s selling price was €5,100.

KILSKEAGH TICKLER – €5,100

Lot 23. Athenry based breeder Patrick Gill sold his first prize winner KILSKEAGH TICKLER for €5,100. Tickler has Ewdenvale Ivor, On-Dit and Wilodge Vantastic in his sire stack. Tickler has a five star Replacement index value of €128 and a five star Terminal index value of €148.

KELTIC TICTOC – €5,100

Lot 34. Also realising €5,100 was KELTIC TICTOC from the herd of Teleri Thomas, Co. Meath. Tictoc is a third prize winning son of Loyal and the Tomschoice Lexicon dam Keltic Riva. Tictoc has five star ratings in Replacement index, Terminal index, Docility, Carcass weight, Carcass conformation and Daughter milk.

BALLYKINNCURRA TYSON – €4,800

Lot 43. BALLYKINNCURRA TYSON, a son of Frascati sold for €4,800. Tyson has a predicted calving difficulty of 1.9% on Beef cows, he has five star ratings in Terminal index, Carcass weight, Carcass conformation and Daughter milk. Tyson was bred in Corofin, Co. Clare by John and Sean Moroney.

Lot 47. The second bull on offer from John Lynch was the Ampertaine Commander son PORTAUNS U BOY, he changed hands for €4,700. U Boy’s dam Portauns Pauline has Bavardage and Ulm in her sire stack. Fourteen month old U Boy was placed second in his class.

BUNNYMORE TUCKER – €4,600

Lot 3. Michael Reynolds, Carrick On Shannon, Co. Leitrim took home €4,600 for his July 2022 born bull BUNNYMORE TUCKER. Tucker is a son of Bavardage. He has five star ratings in Terminal index, Carcass weight, Carcass conformation and Daughter milk. Tucker was acquired by a Tipperary based purchaser.

Lot 26. Patrick Gill returned to the ring with KILSKEAGH TELE, a multi-starred son of Ampertaine Metric and the Tomschoice Lexicon dam Kilskeagh Rose. Tele was purchased by a county Louth based farmer for €4,500.

CAVELANDS TODD – €4,000

Lot 4. Four bulls changed hands for €4,000, first of these was CAVELANDS TODD from Paul Sykes. Todd is a son of Jt (Cameos X Nimbus-Mn) and Cavelands Libby, a daughter of Brooklands F0959. Todd was placed second in his show class.

Lot 5. Also at €4000 was CLYDAGH TYSON from the herd of Frank Philbin, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. Tyson is a son of Loyal. His back pedigree includes Ronick Hawk and Lino. Tyson was placed third in his class.

Lot 12. James Hannon, Bunratty, Co. Clare accepted €4,000 from DRUMLINE T 1238, a son of Grangeford Jojo Et and the Sympa dam Wood Road Jasmine Et. T 1238 has an array of five star ratings.

SPRINGVALLEY TERRANCE – €4,000

Lot 45. Second prize winner SPRINGVALLEY TERRANCE was the final bull to fetch €4,000. Terrance has Ampertaine Majestic, Fieldson Alfy and Mas Du Clo in his sire stack. December 2022 born Terrance was bred by Martin and Kieran Killeen.

LISNA UNBELIEVABLE -€3,900

Lot 52. One of the youngest bulls on offer LISNA UNBELIEVABLE sold for €3,900. Unbelievable has Tomschoice Lexicon, Haltcliffe Dancer and Nadalou in his lineage. A Carlow based customer acquired first prize winning Unbelievable.

Lot 27. The Telfers Munster son DERRA TYLER was snapped up for €3,600. Tyler was bred in Gort, Co. Galway by Gerry Shaughnessy. Second prize winner Tyler has five star ratings in Terminal index, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation.

Lot 48. €3,500 was top call for BOVINION ULYSSES from the herd of Thomas Finnerty, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway. Fourth prize winning Ulysses has Ampertaine Metric, Ampertaine Foreman and Cornamundy Tino in his sire stack.
