Roscrea Mart on Bank Holiday Monday June 4th, 2018 was a hive of activity when three renowned herds – Grangeford, Ballinrahin and Baileys – came together to hold their inaugural production sale of 17 incalf and 34 maiden heifers. A tremendous line-up of top quality heifers – steeped in some of the best genetics available were auctioned by Denis Barrett. All but six of the heifers found new homes.

Grangeford herd

Commenting prior to the sale Gary Morrissey of the Grangeford herd said: Welcome to the first production sale from the Grangeford Herd. After a number of years working hard to build a herd of quality Limousin cows, we find ourselves in the position to offer, for sale, a superb batch of breeding females.

By bringing our herds together, Mick Malone (Ballinrahin), Tom Bailey (Baileys) and Myself (Grangeford) figured we could gather together 50 or so top quality heifers to offer at auction.

Between us three, we hope you will find a pen of the highest quality heifers in Roscrea Mart on June 4 and we wish all our successful customers the very best with their new purchases and hope they go on and be very lucky indeed.

Our selection of heifers comes from our top bloodlines in the herd, most notably Goldies Flojo, who has bred two All-Ireland Champions in Grangeford Jojo and Grangeford Lady(Lot 4), Procters Ena, a tremendous Haltcliffe Vermount daughter who is granddam of Lot 1,2 and 35 and Woodroad Ann, a daughter of the renowned Nadia B who is granddam of lot 17 and 34.

The first daughters of Grangeford Jojo are also in my selection. Jojo has had tremendous success culminating in winning Overall male champion at the National Show in Tullamore 2015. Now our stock sire he is leaving some outstanding calves on the ground with a major plus being his ease of calving. Semen of Jojo is available through Bartley Finnegan Elite Pedigree Genetics.

We would like to thank all who helped out along the way including the staff in the Limousin office and at the Mart in Roscrea for all their assistance, and to Dennis Barret for auctioneering on the day.

Kind regards

Gary

Ballinrahin Herd

Commenting prior to the sale Mick Malone of Ballinrahin Limousin herd said: Ballinrahin Limousin was established in 2004 with the purchase of two females from Pelletstown Limousin herd owned by Dr Rodger McCarrick. Over the next number of years, we build our herd with purchases from the Castleview herd and the Roundhill herd but to name a few.

Our herd began to grow even further with the purchase of Foxhill Farm Isadora at the Red Ladies sale in Carlisle and Ampertaine Harmony soon after at the Cowportation dispersal sale in Carlisle also.

Both of these cows have females in the sale today. Isadora, going back to the great breeding cows Bankdale Channel and Bankdale Alice on the dam line with Lots 13 and 43.

Ampertaine Harmony needs no introduction, breeding Ballinrahin Kent who was very successful for us becoming September champion at the World Limousin Congress in 2016 and is senior stock bull at Ballinrahin. The first of Kents calves are on the ground and we are very happy with them but most importantly easy calved. Ballinrahin Kent semen will be available by the end of the year. Ampertaine Harmony’s natural heifer is entered into the sale today, lot number 16 sired by Kaprico Eravelle. This heifer would be a big addition to any herd.

We would like to thank all for their help to get our heifers here today but to name a few Kevin from Millrose Limousin, Roscrea Livestock sales, the Irish Limousin Cattle Society and my wife Frances and the girls.

On behalf of myself and the other two breeders, we wish all the purchasers the best of luck with their new stock.

Kind regards,

Mick
