Tullamore Mart hosted the third society sale of 2018 on Saturday the 24th March 2018. The sale met with a mixed trade – however an average selling price of €3,154 was obtained, this average was an increase of €146 on the 2017 rate.

Amongst the purchasers were dairy farmers which continues the trend of recent years where the fluctuations in milk prices is leading to many dairy farmers seeing the higher value of a Limousin sired calf.

Auctioneer for the day was George Candler. Stewarding duties were undertaken by Ann Hester and Donal Moloney, with judging performed by Shanon Kinahan.

The society would like to thank all purchasers, exhibitors, officials and the management & staff of Tullamore mart.

Taking the plaudits of Champion and topping the sale was Sliabh Felim Leo. Born in August 2016, Leo is an impressive son of Chaumeil (S1427) and the homebred Bavardage daughter, Sliabh Felim Jenny. Leo was bred in County Limerick by Sean Ryan, Cappamore. Boasting five-star ratings in Terminal Index, Replacement Index, Carcass weight, Carcass conformation and Daughter milk.  After a spell of sustained bidding Michael Mahon, Kinvara, Co. Galway was the successful bidder for Leo at €5,000.

The Reserve Champion Derrygullinane Likeabull sold for €3,750. Likeabull was exhibited by Gerry Walsh, Ballina, Co. Mayo. Born in September 2016, Likeabull has five-star ratings in most traits, including a Terminal index of €161 and a Replacement index of €120. Likeabull has Gerrygullinane Glen, Lino and Ideal 23 in his sire stack. Mervyn Stanley, Timahoe, Co. Laois was his eventual purchaser.

 

Patrick Fortune, Gorey, Co. Wexford purchased Shannon Lyre from Sarah McElligott, Asdee, Listowel, Co. Kerry. Lyre has On-Dit, Ampertaine Commander and Moero in his sire stack. He came to the ring with a five-star Terminal Index of €131 and a five-star Replacement index of €106. First prize winning Lyre sold for €3,600.

Corrakid Larry, a 15-month old Wilodge Cerberus son commanded a price of €3,550 for his breeder Barry Dooley, Inniskeen, Co. Monaghan. Larry has five-star ratings in Terminal Index, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. Nurney, Co. Kildare based James Sunderland purchased Larry.

Brian Campion, Rathdowney, Co. Laois sold his second prize winner Knockiel Laszlo for €3,250. Eye-catching Laszlo has Ewdenvale Ivor, Grahams Unbeatable and Moero in his lineage. He came to the ring with a five-star Terminal index of €142 and a five-star Replacement index of €123. Laszlo was acquired by Matthew Kelly for his herd in Newtownallen, Co. Carlow.

Also heading to county Carlow is the Kaprico Eravelle son Derryhall Leonardo. Eighteen-month-old Leonardo has five-star ratings in most traits. His back pedigree includes Netherhall Epic and Sable. Leonardo was bred by Patricia McHugh-Dolan, Mullingar, Co Westmeath. Patricia received €3,150 for Leonardo.

Selling at €3,000 was Coolrain Lord from Gearoid and Padraic Kennedy, Portlaoise, Co. Laois. Lord is a son of the Kennedy’s herd sire Drummin Goliath (a Wilodge Vantastic son). Second prize winning Lord has five-star ratings in Terminal index, Replacement index, Carcass weight, Carcass conformation and Daughter calving interval. Lord was purchased by Paul Maher, Rosenallis, Co. Laois.

Also recording a price of €3,000 was Farmleigh Leroy from Thomas Swaine, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. Leroy is a multi-starred son of Newtown Hugo (herd sire at Farmleigh) and Farmleigh Honey Penny a Carmorn Eurostar daughter. Placed first in his class, Leroy was acquired by Eoin Dooley, Portaloise, Co. Laois.

Two bulls recorded a selling price of €2,800. First at this mark was Keltic Lionprince from Teleri Thomas, Enfield, Co. Meath. Lionprince has Cameos, Greenwell Major and Broadmeadows Cannon in his sire stack. He was acquired by Birr, Co. Offaly based John Flaherty.

The second bull to reach €2,800 was Roundhill Mature from Tim and Doreen Corridan, Fedamore, Co. Limerick. Mature is a son of Castleview Gallant (an Ampertaine Commander son) and Roundhill Jgiroflee 1565. With an array of five-star ratings, Mature was purchased by Margaret Reilly, Athlone, Co. Westmeath.

Crillaune Lionel, a Wilodge Tonka son sold for €2,750. Lionel was presented at this sale by Michael Mctigue, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. He was purchased by Ronan Dalton, Birr, Co. Offaly.

Sarah McElligott sold Shannon Laval for €2,700 to Edward Oakley, Birr. Multi-starred Laval has Favars, Wilodge Goldcard and Nimbus-Mn in his sire stack.

Selling at €2,400 was Finglass Larry and Ballinascraw Luther. Finglass Larry is a son of Castleview Gazelle and the Malibu daughter Finglass Camilla. He was bred by John Compton, Cluen, Co. Tipperary. Larry was purchased by local farmer Bernard Heavey, Screggan. Ballinascraw Luther was bred by father and son John and Stephen Lynch, Ballinalee, Co. Longford. Luther has Cameos, Tricot-Mn and Wilodge Tonka in his pedigree. Peter Fagan, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath purchased multi-starred Luther.

Two young heifers were also offered for sale here in Tullamore – both left the ring unsold. Champion heifer was awarded to Boyanagh Lola from the Trapey family, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. Lola is a daughter of Vermeil. Her stablemate Boyanagh Lila took the Reserve Champion heifer rosette. Lila is an October 2016 born daughter of Elite Forever Brill Et and Cookstown Universe, a Ferry daughter.
