The annual Limousin sale in Athenry mart was held on Thursday the 12th of April 2018. An average price of €3373 – an increase of €150 from last year’s average of €3,223 was achieved. Prices ranged from €2000 to €6000.

The pre-sale show was judged by Gareth McGuinness. Auctioneering duties fell to Denis Barrett. Stewards in Athenry were Sarah McElligott and Michael Oliver.

The next society sale will be our premier sale on Monday the 14th May in Roscrea mart.

Topping the sale at €6000 was Ballymulavil Leo, a September 2016 born son of Kaprico Eravelle and the Bavardage daughter Thomastown Joan (Joan was purchased as an in-calf heifer at John Downey’s Thomastown dispersal sale, Leo is her first calf). Leo has five-star ratings in Terminal index, Replacement index, Docility, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. Leo was presented for sale by his breeder John Connor, Claremorris, Co. Mayo. This second prize winner was much admired in the sales ring and after a flurry of bids he was eventually acquired by a Galway based farmer.

Gareth awarded Junior Champion to Millburn Louxor Et from Richard O’Beirne, Tuam, Co. Galway. Louxor is a son of Ampertaine Commander and the Mas Du Clo daughter Millburn Bobby Dazzler Et. With five-star ratings in most traits, Louxor was acquired by local farmer Michael Donnellan, Farnablake for €5300.

Multi-starred Galbally Lucas 1187 commanded a selling price of €4700. Lucas was bred in county Wexford by Trevor Masterson, Enniscorthy. Lucas has Lodge Hamlet, Emerson and Penane Prince in his sire stack. Bernard Mulry, Tuam, Co. Galway acquired Lucas.

Lot 77. Michael McKeown, Castlebar, Co. Mayo accepted a selling price of €4600 for his December 2016 born bull – Currane Leo. Fourth prize winner Leo, has Cloughhead Umpire, Ronick Hawk, Casimir and Malibu in his back pedigree. Multi-starred Leo was purchased by Liam Whelan, Ballyroan, Co. Laois.

The Pulmtree Fantastic son Carrigdown Lojo sold for €4500. Lojo has five-star ratings in many traits along with a muscle score of 137. Lojo was bred by Aidan Baker, North Circular Road, Co. Limerick. Tom Pentony, Athboy, Co. Laois purchased first prize winner Lojo.

Both Reserve Champions sold for €4200. Bremore Larry 2nd from the renowned herd of Bobby Jones, Skerries, Co. Dublin took the Reserve Senior Champion rosette. Larry 2nd is a son of Bobby’s herd sire Hortensia (sourced by Bobby in France and now sire to 52 cattle born into the herd. Hortensia has five-star ratings in Maternal index and Terminal index, and an excellent temperament – all traits he has passed on to his offspring). Larry 2nd, a September 2016 born bull has five-star ratings in Terminal index, Maternal index, Carcass weight, Carcass conformation and Daughter milk. His home bred dam Helen has Cesar and Bremore Volvo in her lineage.  Larry 2nd was acquired by Kenneth Waldron, Milltown, Co. Galway.

Reserve Junior Champion Brooklands Leo is a December 2016 born son of Bova AI’s Gamin (ZGM). Leo came to the ring with five-star ratings in Terminal index, Replacement index, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. Leo was bred in Enniskeane, Co. Cork by Clive Jennings. His dam Brooklands Ivana is a daughter of the homebred Brooklands F0959 (standing in Dovea Genetics, with the AI code KJB, he has in excess of 1100 calves on the ground) and Brooklands G1032, an Elegante Earl daughter. Leo was purchased by Christy Faul, Kilcolgan, Co. Galway.

The first bull into the ring in Athenry was Green Hill Leo a second prize winner from the herd of Mary McLoughlin, Ballina, Co. Mayo. Leo is a son of Queenshead Altea and the Meridian daughter Green Hill Virgina. Boasting five-star ratings in many traits, Leo was purchased by Joe Hannon, Newmarket On Fergus, Co. Clare for €4100.

Local breeder Patrick Gill, Kilskeagh, Athenry presented two bulls at the sale, Patrick’s first bull is an On-Dit son Kilskeagh Loner Et. Loner’s dam Kilskeagh Breda is a daughter of Lino. Multi starred Loner will be staying in the Athenry area as he was procured by local farmer Sean Feeney for €4100.

The Senior Champion Clew Bay Leo was presented by Padraic Golden, Westport, Co. Mayo. Leo is a son of Wilodge Joskins and Thomastown Hafwen, a Malibu daughter. Born in October 2016, Leo has five-star ratings in Terminal index, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. He was purchased by Thomas Flynn, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway for €4100.

Senior Champion Clew Bay Leo – €4,100

Also finding a new home in a Ballinasloe herd was third prize winner Bunnymore Laurance. This September 2016 born bull has Ronick Hawk, Ampertaine Commander and Highlander in his sire stack. Bred in Co. Leitrim by Michael Reynolds, Carrick-on-Shannon, Laurance was purchased by Paraic Collins for €3900.

Three bulls reached €3800. First at this price was Dromod Landmark, a Kaprico Eravelle son. Landmark was presented for sale by Michael Montgomery, Quility, Co. Clare. He has five star ratings in Terminal index, Replacement index, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. Place second in his class in the pre-sale show, Landmark was purchased by Peter McDermot, Keenagh, Co. Longford.

 

Dromod Landmark – €3,800

Derra Legend, a third prize winning son of Wilodge Cerberus and the Sympa daughter Wood Road Eva Et also reached the €3800 mark. Legend was bred by Gerry Shaughnessy, Gort, Co. Galway. With five star ratings in most traits, Legend was acquired by local farmer Peter Flannery, Athenry.

€3800 was also the selling price for Montclare Lincoln. October 2016 born Lincoln was bred by Michael Montgomery, Quilty. Lincoln has Kaprico Eravelle, Castleview Virulent and Newtown Adrian in his sire stack. Third prize winning Lincoln sold to Michael Cannon, Claremorris, Co. Mayo.

Also, from the Millburn herd came Millburn Last Tango, a Queenshead Altea son, with Ampertaine Commander and Neuf in his back pedigree. Last Tango has five star ratings in many traits. This second prize winner was acquired by Larry Prendville, Westmeath for €3700.

David Cogan, Kilmovee, Co. Mayo received €3600 for Clooncara Limousins Longshot. Born in November 2016, Longshot has Ampertaine Gigolo, Wilodge Tonka and Ionesco in his sire stack. With an array of five star ratings, fourth prize winning Longshot was purchased by Michael Cunningham, Broadford, Co. Limerick.

Kilmallock, Co. Limerick breeder Laurence Lynch accepted €3600 for Portauns Larry. This November 2016 born bull has Wilodge Joskins, Queenshead Altea and Ideal 23 in his sire stack. Third prize winning Larry was purchased by David Donnellan, Loughrea, Co. Galway.

The On-dit son Lavalla Leo sold for €3500. Born in August 2016, Leo’s dam Lavalla Fiona has Neuf and Highlander in her back pedigree. Leo was bred by Kevin Crowley, Ballynacally, Ennis Co. Clare. James Murphy, Rhode, Co. Offaly purchased Leo.

Maythorn Lotto, also an On-dit son, reached the same selling price of €3500. Multi-starred Lotto’s dam Maythorn Helen has Fieldson Alfy and Highlander in her sire stack. Lotto was bred in Carrickmacross, Co. Monaghan by Martin McConnon. He was acquired by Padraig Harney, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway.

Local farmer Tom Whelan, Athenry purchased Corcamore Liam for €3500. Liam is a multi-starred son of the society sire Armoric (a Neuf son) and Carwin Intuition (a Roundhill Saturn daughter). Liam was bred by Brendan Curtin, Clarina, Co. Limerick.

First prize winner Coraghy Mischief also found a new home at €3500. Mischief has Ampertaine Gigolo, On-Dit and Ionesco in his sire stack. This multi-starred young bull was bred in Clones, Co. Monaghan by Thomas O’Harte. He was purchased by William Jennings Ballineen, Co. Cork.

Michael McKeown, Castlebar sold his Ampertaine Gigolo son Currane Lee for €3450. Lee’s dam Currane Lacey has Cloughhead Umpire and Sarkley Pepsi in her lineage. November 2016 born Lee was purchased by John Keane, Mullingar.

Galbally Levi 1199, a Sable son sold for €3300. Levi’s dam Galbally Imogen 2 has Galbally Danastic and Milbrook Tanko in her sire stack. Levi has five star ratings in Terminal index, Replacement index, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. He was acquired by Noel Hannon, Ballyforan, Co. Galway.

Third prize winner Novinchristine Laurence sold for €3200. Laurence is steeped in Novinchristine genetics, his sire is the homebred Vison son Jeronimo while his dam Eithne has Nesquick and Navarin in her sire stack. June 2016 born Laurence was bred by Noel Barry, Swinford, Co. Mayo. He was purchased by Gerard Qualter, Athenry.

€3100 for top call for Millburn Lyon a second prize winner. Lyon is a son of Wilodge Joskins and the Millbrook Tanko daughter Millburn Carena. Lyon was bred by Richard O’Beirne, Tuam and sold to Pat Walsh, Borrisokane, Co. Tipperary.

Fourth prize winner Aloor Lotus commanded a selling prize of €3000. Lotus is a son of Castleview Casino and the Haltcliffe Underwriter daughter Aloor Gemma. Lotus was bred by Patsy Creighton, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. He was purchased by Agnes Murphy to run with her Moycullen, Co. Galway herd.

Teleri Thomas, Enfield, Co. Meath sold first prize winner Keltic Leopold for €3000. Leopold is a son of Tomschoice Ironstone and the Ionesco daughter Keltic Esther. With five star ratings in many traits he was purchased by John and Peter Heslin, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath.

Two heifers were presented at the show and sale both from Mary Tarpey, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. First prize was awarded to Boyanagh Libby, a Vermeil daughter, second went to Boyanagh Leah, also by Vermeil. Both heifers failed to meet their reserves and left the ring unsold.
