
The South West and Cork Clubs held their third biennial heifer sale on Saturday, September 6th, in Roscrea Mart. The event was a great success, with a top price of €10,000 and an average price of €4,790. With a catalogue of 34 heifers there was plenty of choice on offer.
Lot 33. Topping the prices was Knockcoolkeare Violet, a Plumtree Fantastic daughter from Michael Roche’s herd in Mountcollins, Co. Limerick. Born in November 2024, Violet had a fantastic showing season, winning first prize in her class at the National Show in Tullamore. Her other titles included Champion at Middleton Show, Reserve at Cork Show, and Reserve Champion MAS All Ireland Interbreed Calf 2025. She also won the High Replacement Index class at Limerick Show. Violet’s dam, Knockcoolkeare Toffee, was also a successful show heifer, taking the Junior Female Champion title at the National Show in 2023. Toffee is sired by the AI bull Elite Lazette and out of Wood Road Nollaig. Violet was purchased by a buyer from Northern Ireland.
Lot 11. Ryans Ulla, a daughter of Claddagh McCabe ET, sold for €6,600. Born in October 2023, Ulla’s dam is the Loyal daughter Clonduff Nellie. Ulla is a single carrier of the F94L and Q204X genes. Bred in Ballyhooly, Co. Cork by Ger Ryan, she is now headed to a new home in Mallow.
Lot 2. Two heifers sold for €6,000. The first at this price was the in-calf Ewdenvale Ivor daughter, Portauns U Ivy, from Laurence and John Lynch in Kilmallock, Co. Limerick. U Ivy’s dam is the homebred Ampertaine Commander daughter, Portauns Polly 1070. U Ivy has a single copy of the F94L and Q204X genes and was acquired by a Galway-based buyer.
Lot 24. Also selling for €6,000 and heading to a new home in Kerry was the 13-month-old Wood Road Violet from Noel Fennessy’s herd in Castleconnell, Co. Limerick. Violet is a daughter of Ampertaine Jackpot and the Bavardage daughter, Wood Road Ruth.
Lot 3. From the same yard, Wood Road Uma, an in-calf daughter of Foxhillfarm Jasper and Wood Road Gerada ET (Sympa X Horion), sold for €5,900. Uma is headed to a new home in Monaghan.
Lot 32. A Laois-based bidder secured Knockcoolkeare Vitality for €5,800. Vitality is a 10-month-old daughter of Ardlea Rigby ET and the Gamin daughter, Knockcoolkeare Lady Nadia B. She was part of Michael Roche’s 2025 show team, picking up first prizes at Bandon Show, the Kingdom County Fair, and Ballyvourney Show.
Lot 1. Wood Road Tatum, the oldest heifer on offer, sold for €5,000. Tatum has Plumtree Fantastic, Sympa, and Apache in her lineage and is in-calf to Ampertaine Jackpot. She was presented by Noel Fennessy, Castleconnell, Co. Limerick.
Three heifers sold for €4,500:
Lot 6. The first was Wood Road Una, an Ampertaine Majestic daughter born in August 2023. Una’s dam, Wood Road Fiona ET, has Sympa and Horion in her lineage. Una was AI’ed to Netsurfer and was purchased by a Roscommon-based buyer.
Lot 19. James and Eric McSweeney from Ballymacelligott, Co. Kerry, accepted €4,500 for their April 2024 born heifer, Ballycarthy Violet. This heifer has Tomschoice Lexicon, Hamac, and Wilodge Cerberus in her sire stack and is a double F94L carrier. Violet is now headed to a new home in Westmeath.
Lot 27. Also by Tomschoice Lexicon, the yearling heifer Powerstown Veronica from Brid Cronin’s Mallow-based herd sold for €4,500. Veronica is a double F94L carrier, and her homebred dam, Powerstown Nellie, is a daughter of Elderberry Galahad. Veronica will be returning to a new home in Mallow.
Lot 34. A successful €4,100 bid from a Galway farmer secured Barryroe Vanilla. The 10-month-old Vanilla has Nebbiolo, Tomschoice Lexicon, and Castleview Gringo in her sire stack and has two copies of the F94L gene. Vanilla was bred in Carrignavar, Cork, by James Wycherley.
Three heifers sold for €4,000:
Lot 15. The Elderberry Galahad daughter Corcamore Ukelele from Brendan Curtin, Clarina, Co. Limerick, was the first of three heifers to sell for €4,000. Ukelele’s dam, Corcamore Nikki, has Grangeford Jojo and Ampertaine Commander in her sire stack. Born in December 2023, Ukelele has two copies of the F94L gene.
Lot 26. The 12-month-old Ballylin Viva from Brian Frawley’s herd in Croagh, Co. Limerick, sold for €4,000. Viva is a daughter of Aughalion Prince ET and the Mereside Godolphin dam, Ballylin Saoirse. She is headed to a new home in County Cork.
Lot 29. Barryroe Violet, an 11-month-old heifer bred by James Wycherley, is now headed to County Laois after selling for €4,000. Violet has Kaprico Eravelle, Ampertaine Commander, and Cloughhead Lord in her sire stack.
