The South West Club held its Calf Championship on Saturday 1st September 2018 in Abbeyfeale Mart. Judge for the competition was Mr. Michael Pat Murphy.
Proving that the cream always rises to the top were Michael Pat’s pick as Champion and Reserve – tapped out as Overall Champion was Tim Corridan’s Roundhill Max Et a son of Elite Ice Cream Et. Standing in Reserve was Michael Roche’s heifer Knockcoolkeare Ms Nadia B, this young heifer is also sired by Elite Ice Cream Et.
After judging Michael Pat commented: I was presented with excellent young livestock here today – the top-end of which are exceptional. Thanks to the South West club for inviting me to judge here today.
After the calves were judged – Doreen Corridan gave a very insightful speech on Herd Health. Followed by a demonstration by John O’Connor on the different meat cuts.
A YMA workshop also took place. The young members assembled were given pointers on showing and judging by Avril Gubbins. After which they were given the opportunity to show a calf and given valuable feedback. After the workshop the young members were presented with prizes and goody bags.
To finish off the evening everyone enjoyed a barbecue expertly cooked by John O’Connor.
The club would like to thank Michael Pat for judging, John O’Connor for both his presentation and the delicious Barbecue, Doreen Corridan for her insightful speech on Herd Health and Avril Gubbins for her assistance and guidance to the Young members.
