On Monday the 19th March the Sexton family, of the renowned Mount Scott pedigree Limousin herd, held an open day on their farm in the picturesque village of Mullagh in Co. Clare. The herd which will be dispersed on Bank Holiday Monday the 2nd April at Roscrea mart is to the fore front of Limousin breeding in Ireland since its foundation in 1991.

The herd has enjoyed many successes at shows and sales in the past 27 years. One of Michael’s stand out achievements was when the homebred bull Mount Scott Percy was crowned Overall champion at the RDS Spring show 2002. Percy won 30 red rosettes and was crowned Reserve champion in both Tullamore show and at the National Ploughing Championship in 2003.

Mount Scott Tara was unbeaten in her show career and sold at 20 months old for €10,400.

Michael is a highly regarded stock man, he put his stock judging skills to great use when in 1996 on a visit to the Limoges area of France purchased a new stock sire, what a purchase – Gamin (GIA)!  Gamin left an enduring legacy in not only the Mount Scott herd also through his usage in AI in many herds both in Ireland and in the UK.

AI is used on up to 80% of the cows in the herd – in the past AI sires used include:

  • Dauphin
  • Villy
  • Highlander
  • Espoir
  • Ideal 23
  • Ronick Hawk
  • Samy
  • Wilodge Cerebus
  • Ampertaine Foreman

  • Aloor Felix
  • Ballyfin Empire
  • Kilskeagh Jisop
  • Gamin

Milk, docility and ease of calving are the top priorities for Michael in his breeding program.

Testament to Michael’s ability as a breeder of note – the quality and docility of the herd is second to none.

The herd is 35 years T.B. and brucellosis free, all females have been scanned and all bulls are fertility tested.
