Limousin cows have once again proven their superior carcass quality, sweeping the top three prizes at the Ashbourne Meats Cow Carcass Competition. The event, held on Wednesday, July 2nd, was part of Ashbourne Meats’ 40th-anniversary celebrations.

Competition Highlights

Esteemed judge Henri Hofman oversaw the competition, where Limousin carcasses consistently impressed. The results showcased the breed’s exceptional performance:

  • First Prize: Brian Frawley of Croagh, Co. Limerick, took home the top honour and €500 in prize money for his July 2013-born pedigree Limousin cow, “BALLYLIN ISOBEL.” This outstanding cow graded an E-4= with a carcass weight of 584kg. Isobel, a daughter of Lowerffrydd Empire and the Wood Road Donald daughter Wood Road Geraldine, left a lasting legacy in the Ballylin herd, Brian has retained many daughters and grand-daugthers. One of Isobel’s most notable sons, Ballylin Popeye, has achieved international acclaim. Sold at the Premier Show & Sale in Roscrea in May 2021 to a UK-based buyer, Popeye has since become the sire of the overall supreme interbreed beef champion at the prestigious English Winter Fair.
  • Second Prize: A Limousin cow from Liam Judge’s herd secured second place, achieving a U+4+ grade.
  • Third Prize: Brian Campion’s Limousin cow rounded out the top three, also grading an E-4=.

The competition emphasises the consistent quality and traits of the Limousin breed, making them a clear frontrunner in the beef industry.

Congratulations to all entrants.
