Last night, Thursday August 20th, saw the annual show & sale of Limousin & Belgian Blue Autumn weanlings in Gort Co-operative Mart, Co. Galway.
The standard of calves especially in the Limousin bull section was such that many farmers who left home perhaps confident of taking a rosette were disappointed from a showing perspective but not in the sale which saw great demand for quality cattle in both the bull & heifer rings.

Weanling Bulls
Renowned showman Donal Moloney from the Ardnacrusha Limousin herd judged the Limousin Bull section.

The Champion LMX bull calf went to Tony Cahill, Corrandulla for his super December ’19 born calf. This is a heifer’s calf off a LMX dam. He weighed 415kg and sold for €1280 3.08/kg.

The Reserve went to Nicholas Flaherty, Moycullen for his Dec’19 born calf. This is a ZAG calf by a TVR dam. He weighed 490kg and sold for €1290 or €2.63/kg.
The Bull ring saw a great trade for both light and heavier calves. The quality on offer throughout the evening was excellent.

310kg – €1140 €3.68/kg (Feb born calf)
340kg – €1140 €3.35/kg
365kg – €1110 €3.04/kg
390kg – €1140 €2.92/kg

Weanling Heifers
Brendan Kenny & Donal Moloney judged the Limousin heifer section.

1st & 2nd went to Monica Dugan, Mullagh, Co. Clare. These Oct’19 born heifers went into the sale ring together with an average weight of 388kg and sold for €1,130 each or €2.91/kg.
