The annual Bank Holiday Premier show and sale took place in Roscrea mart on Monday the 30th of October 2023, and what a sale it proved to be. Standing room was at a premium as the sale got under way. Auctioneer George Candler was on the rostrum. It proved to be an incredibly busy few hours for George and the team at Roscrea Mart. Farmers are seeing first-hand how well Limousin are doing in the commercial rings throughout the country including taking the red rosettes in many weanlings’ show and sales. Limousin continues to be the number 1 suckler dam, number 1 beef sire, number 1 beef AI sire, number 1 continental breed on the dairy herd. Buyer confidence is at an all time high in the bred and this confidence met with a fantastic clearance rate of 87% for bulls and 55% for heifers. Judging the pre-sale show was renowned commercial producer Mr. Gareth Corrie.

Seven cattle sold are destinated for the UK and Northern Ireland. Bulls ranged in price from €2,900 to €16,500 with an average price of €5,144. While the heifers on offer ranged from €2,400 to €6,100 with an average price of €3,760.

 

Carrefour Turbo – Junior Champion

Lot 62. Standing as Junior Champion and selling for the sales top price of €16,500 was CARREFOUR TURBO, from John Kenny, Dunkerrin, Co. Offaly. Turbo is an outstanding son of Derrygullinane Kingbull and the Wilodge Cerberus dam Carrefour Madonna, his full brother was a first prize winner at the Premier show and sale last year. Mayo bred Derrygullinane Kingbull is producing outstanding livestock with his offspring commanding top placings at shows including the Junior Championships at the noted Royal Welsh show. Carrefour Turbo boasts five star indexes in Terminal, Docility, Carcass weight, and Carcass conformation. A leading pedigree and commercial producer acquired him.

Sliabh Felim Toddy

Lot 77. Sean Ryan of the Sliabh Felim herd, Cappamore, Co. Limerick presented their outstanding Damona sired SLIABH FELIM TODDY. Standing second in his class, Toddy took the second highest price of the day when the gavel fell at €8,800 . This young bull is very well related – his dam is a full sister to Sliabh Felim Sterling standing in Dovea AI. His grand dam Sliabh Felim Jenny is also dam to the 2019 top priced bull Sliabh Felim Mourinho, a herd sire to the highly regarded Maraiscote herd of the Nimmo family in Scotland. Mourinho is proving his credentials with a son sold at the recent Sterling bull sale for 9,000 gns. Toddy is heading to an established Pedigree herd in the South East.

Reserve Junior Champion – Baileys Trump Et

Lot 86. Reserve Junior Champion BAILEYS TRUMP ET sold for €8,600. This 13 month old bull was bred by Thomas Bailey, Batterstown, Meath. Trump is a son of Wilodge Vantastic and Baileys Norma Et, a daughter of Goldies Jackpot and Roundhill Vjoyeuse 820 Et – a granddam that needs no introduction – she is the dam of World Congress and National show champion Baileys Ice Princess. Trump has proved himself in the show ring taking the Junior Male Champion sash at this year’s National show. Trump was purchased by a NI based customer.

Reserve Senior Champion – Ballyline Thomas

Lot 41. Reserve Senior Champion BALLYLINE THOMAS sold for €8,200 and is also heading to the UK. April 2022 born Thomas was bred by Bertie Mannion, Athlone, Roscommon. He is a son of Mereside Godolphin and like the Reserve Junior champion his dam Ballyline Norma is also sired by Goldies Jackpot. Thomas has five star indexes in Replacement, Terminal, Docility, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation.

Lot 91. Also breaching the €8,000 was second prize winner BRACKAN TICK TOK ET. Thirteen month old Tick Tok is a son of the aforementioned Derrygullinane Kingbull and the Sympa daughter Esker-Hill Karen Et. Tick Tok was bred by Padraig Gormley, Carrigallen, Leitrim. No stranger to success, Tick Tok won the Reserve Junior Male Champion at Tullamore Show.

Senior Champion Ballybrown Toby ET

Lot 25. Senior Champion BALLYBROWN TOBY ET sold for €7,300. Toby was the Overall Male Champion at this year’s National Show. Born in March 2022, Toby was bred by Bobby O’Connell, Clarina, Limerick. He is a son of Ampertaine Foreman and the Elite Ice Cream dam Roundhill Punanime 1945 Et. Toby has five star indexes in Terminal, Carcass weight, and Carcass conformation.

Fourth prize winner – Keltic Tinder

Lot 29. Teleri Thomas, Longwood, Meath sold her April 2022 born bull KELTIC TINDER for €7,000. Tinder is a son of homebred bull the renowned OKH – Keltic Handsome and the Kaprico Eravelle daughter Keltic Nepeta. Tinder came to the ring as one of the highest index bulls of any beef breed on Replacement index with a value of €209. Tinder placed fourth in his class in the pre-sale show.

Third prize winner -Ernevalley Topnotch

Lot 68. Third prize winner ERNEVALLEY TOPNOTCH realised a selling price of €6,800 for his breeder Eddie Lynch, Loughduff, Cavan. Topnotch is a son of Loyal and the Ampertaine Majestic daughter Ernevalley Partygirl Et. Boasting five star indexes in most traits, 16 month old Topnotch was one of nine bulls presented by the Ernevalley herd.

First prize winner Clonlara Todd

Lot 51. First prize winner CLONLARA TODD sold for €6,200. Todd is a son of Plumtree Fantastic and the Neuf daughter Clonlara Irish Rose. Todd came to the ring with five star indexes in Terminal, Carcass weight, and Carcass conformation. Todd was bred by Colin Hogg of Clonlara, Clare.

Lot 65. Also realising €6,200 was MULLARY TOMATO from Michael Molloy, Dunleer, Louth. Tomato is a Tomschoice Lexicon, he boasts an array of five star ratings coupled with +5.4 for Daughter milk.

Second prize winner – Ballybrown Turbo

Lot 28. The second bull on offer from Bobby O’Connell was €6,000 BALLYBROWN TURBO. This April 2022 born bull is a son of Plumtree Fantastic. He placed second in his class in the show ring.

Third prize winner – Ernevalley Topgun

Lot 46. €5,900 was top call for ERNEVALLEY TOPGUN. This April born bull is one of the first offspring of Hector Gd to come to auction. Placed third in his class in the presale show, Topgun has an array of five star ratings.

Lot 54. Second prize winner BAILEYS TOBY found a new home at €5,700. Toby is a multi-starred son of Goldies Jackpot and the Baileys Darwin daughter Baileys Janet. Toby was bred by Tom Bailey.

Lot 59. MEENROSS TOPPER, a May 2022 born bull bred by James O’Grady, Scariff, Clare sold for €5,700. Topper a third prize winner has Plumtree Fantastic. Ampertaine Commander and Wilodge Cerberus in his lineage.

Lot 27. Hector Gd was also the sire of TOWNLEYHALL TOPNOTCH, presented by Derek Russell, Drogheda, Louth. Topnotch has five star ratings in most traits. He commanded a selling price of €5,400.

Lot 55. Also realising €5,400 was STRAGHEGLIN TRISTAN, a fourth prize winner. Tristan was bred by Ciaran Bogue, Belturbet, Cavan. He is a son of Mereside Godolphin and Stragheglin Linda, a Haltcliffe Gunner daughter.

Ernevalley Toby 2

Lot 67. The third bull to realise €5,400 was Eddie Lynch’s ERNEVALLEY TOBY 2. This June 2022 born bull is a son of Loyal and the Lodge Hamlet daughter, Ernevalley Passion.

Ernevalley Trex

Lot 50. Leopard Mn (a new bloodline in Ireland) is sire to ERNEVALLEY TREX. This 17 month old bull is one of the first Leopard offspring to be offered for sale, his dam Ernevalley Noosense is a daughter of Haltcliffe Vermont. Trex sold for €5,300.

First prize winner – Lisfort Tyson

Lot 5. The Objat son LISFORT TYSON changed hands for €5,200. First prize winning Tyson has Trueman Idol and Rocky in his lineage. Tyson has five star ratings in Terminal, Docility, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. Tyson was bred by Finbar Murphy, Clones, Monaghan.

Lot 33. A Grangeford Jojo Et son ELEGANTE TOFFEE sold for €5,200. Toffee was presented for sale by Bernard Lynch, Lifford, Donegal. Toffee boasts five star ratings in most traits.

First prize winner – Castlebrock Toby Et

Lot 79. CASTLEBROCK TOBY ET, a first prize winner also sold for €5,200. Toby was bred by Gerard Davis, Ballinalee, Longford. He has Mereside Godolphin, Ampertaine Elgin and Attila in his lineage.

Lot 16. Three bulls sold for €5,100. First at this price was COOLFERN TRAVER from Thomas O’Leary, Killorglin, Kerry. Traver is a son of Usse, with Omar and Lacet in his back pedigree.

Lot 49. RYEHILL TESCO also realised €5,200. Tesco was bred by Michael Fox, Athenry, Galway. Tesco is a son of Telfers Munster and Ryehill Kylo, an Ampertaine Elgin daughter. This May 2022 born bull was placed fourth in his class.

Lot 63. Donegal born INISEOGHAIN TJ also sold for €5.200. TJ has Plumtree Fantastic, Haltcliffe Gunner and Broadmeadows Cannon in his lineage. TJ was bred by Bernard Lynch, Lifford.

Lot 84. Third prize winner BRICKHILL TROY was acquired by an established breeder for €5,000. Troy’s pedigree includes Kaprico Eravelle, Ampertaine Foreman and Wilodge Vantastic. Troy was bred by Michael McInerney, Cratloe, Clare.

Reserve Female Champion – Carrickmore Sasha Et

Lot 99. Taking the Reserve Female Champion title was CARRICKMORE SASHA ET from the herd of John and Karol Connell, Oldcastle, Co. Meath. Sasha is an in calf daughter of Sympa and Carrickmore Miss Dynamite Et, a daughter of the renowned Baileys Iceprincess. Sasha came to the ring with a Replacement index of €104 and a Terminal index of €151. She found a new home for €6,100.

Second prize winner – Meelickaduff Take On Me

Lot 117. Second prize winner MEELICKADUFF TAKE ON ME sold for €5,500. Take On Me is a daughter of Plumtree Fantastic and the Ampertaine Elgin dam Meelickaduff Rinka. This yearling heifer was bred by Michael Hester, Castlerea, Roscommon. Take On Me is the reigning North West Calf Champion 2023, Overall Limousin Champion Elphin & Castlerea 2023.

Female Champion – Clontown Stooki and breeders Kieran and Kevin Treanor and show judge Gareth Corrie

Lot 101. Female Champion CLONTOWN STOOKI realised €5,200. Stooki has Ionesco, Wilodge Vantastic and Sympa in her sire stack. Her maternal grand dam is the renowned Haltcliffe Avon (a consistent breeder of show winning  cattle). Stooki was bred by Stephen Treanor, Scotstown, Monaghan. She had a very successful show season.
