The first YMA National Workshop of 2016 kicked off on the 2nd of April in conjunction with Clippers Ireland who very kindly sponsored this event & who are red rosette sponsors for the ILC in August. A large crowd descended on Roscrea Mart for the highly anticipated event.
The day started with Martin Ryan giving a very informative talk on Animal nutrition to a captivated audience, after his presentation Martin answered questions from the crowd expertly as always. Up next was Billy Gubbins & Karol Connell who gave a halter making demo this was watched eagerly by both young & old alike. Following that Richard O’Berine & Karol Connell gave a clipping & grooming demo in which they gave many invaluable tips on clipping and grooming cattle in preparation for a show or sale. They also talked about the importance of safety when haltering, tying and training cattle this was very informative and they had an enthralled audience throughout the demo.
The crowd then moved to the show ring where four heifer calves were brought to the ring for the stock judging and guess the weight with a twist where you had to guess the combined weight of the 4 calves. Then Master Judge Clive Jennings gave his reasons for the way he placed the calves 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 4th.
Clive gave a comprehensive talk on how to judge an animal. Clive then proceeded to give a detailed overview as to how to handle an animal in the ring noting the importance of having the halter on correctly when showing your calf so you can remain in control. This handling demo was given in conjunction with two accomplished YMA members Rachel Moloney & Owen Hester who were members of the winning 2015 Irish Team who retained the Anglo-Irish YMA title at the English Winter Fair in Staffordshire last November. Rachel & Owen had their skills put to the test as it was the calves first day out and they had a slight spring in there step. Clive spoke about the importance of observing the proper dress code as displayed by both the handlers in the ring when showing an animal. Noting attention to detail is of upmost importance.
