The final of the  Anglo Irish Young Members Stockperson Championship 2009 was staged at Borderway Mart Carlisle on 17th December .

The Irish team included Tom Hickey Thurles , Sean Moroney, Corofin, who had both qualified from the YMA Limousin workshop held at the Elphin show and hosted by the North West Limousin Club.

The other two members of the team were Stephen Lynch , Ballinalee and April Higgins, Claremorris who had qualified at the NPA in Athy.

Due to the fact that the Red Ladies and Calf Sale were being held on the following day a large Irish presence was in attendance along with family members who had also travelled support the team

The competition is divided into the following sections.

  • Stock judging - Four bulls are judged by each competitor.
  • Each competitor will explain the reasons for their placings of the four bulls, to a three judge panel, who have already assessed the bulls.
  • In both of these sections factors such as appearance and manner of presentation, observations of the animals, comparisons between each animal, style, ability and confidence are all taken in to consideration.
  • The final section is stock handling where each competitor has to show a heifer in the ring. Scoring in this section is allocated to the ability to parade an animal, placing for the judge, knowledge of the animal and attention to the judge.

The overall standard of the competition was extremely high and the manner in which all the competitors applied themselves to each section of the competition was commendable. The manner and attention to detail of each team member was truly indicative of an international competition.

Finally it came to the results with team members and supporters anxiously waiting to see who would be awarded the winning positions.

Northern Ireland were awarded the top  place with the Irish Team taking second place and finally The UK Team being placed third.

A great result for the Irish Team and now the attention turned to the individual awards, last year Ireland had the honour of claiming this title with Tom Hickey being the recipient. Irish eyes were indeed smiling when Tom Hickey again took the title with David Gethin  of the UK Team second place and Kim Steele-Nicholson of the Northern Ireland Team taking third place.

Winning the individual award two years in succession especially considering the calibre of the competitors is a major achievement and the Irish Limousin Cattle Society are very proud of Tom’s success.

More delight was to follow in the Junior Young Handlers Competition Congratulations to the winners in this section first prize Thomas Illingworth, second prize Jennifer Hyslop, third prize April Higgins fourth prize Andrew Ewing.

In the Senior Young Handlers section the results were first place Richard Priestley, second place Michael Norman, third place William Mc Elroy and fourth place Josh Wainright. It has to be mentioned the ability of William McElroy to hold calves.

Overall it was a great achievement for our Irish Team to win the different awards but we must acknowledge the following people.

James Wycherley the Irish YMA  co ordinator who has devoted so much time to the Irish Limousin YMA and also to the international competition. James is one of the main reasons why the YMA is growing in Ireland and is such a success both at home and abroad.Likewise Michael Gunn, Pat Bruen along with the North West Limousin Club and Elphin  Agricultural Show Society who hosted the 2009 YMA workshop. To Teleri Thomas, Mac Murphy, Richard O Beirne, Gareth Mc Guiness , Karl Connell, William Smith all of whom generously gave their time to ensure the success of the YMA.

Thank you also to the stewards at the YMA events, the handlers who gave their cattle for the events, the sponsors, the parents who transported and ensured they participated and finally to the breeders and general public who supported and made these events worthwhile.

Special mention to Shirley Busteed of the Irish Farmers Journal who travelled to Carlisle and whom previously had been a part of the judging panel at the NPA.  Many thanks to Shirley, for travelling to Carlisle and also for her wonderful reports on the different YMA events.

On behalf of the ILCS I would to extend a sincere gratitude to Iian Kerr, Richard Saunders, Jim Bloom of the BLCS for their hosting of the event. To James Cooper and Rob Kirton for all their time and hospitality .

Special thanks to David Tomlinson and Heather Pritchard of Harrison and Hetherington’s for all their help. Thank you to all the British breeders who always make Irish visitors so welcome. Finally once again I would like to congratulate the Irish team and all who travelled over for both their achievements and for making the event such an enjoyable occasion. All were a credit to the ILCS and we thank you most sincerely.

We have no doubt that each one of the team will go on to judge many events in the future.
