Meelickaduff Honda - RDS Champion of Champions 2016

The majority of us associate the word Honda with some sort of a vehicle, however if you mention the word Honda in the townland of Meelickaduff, Castlerea, Co Roscommon, everyone will know it’s definitely not a vehicle. It’s a pedigree Limousin Cow belonging to Owen Hester. For just over the past 3 years, this cow has travelled the length and breadth of the country, with the Roscommon teenager competing at various shows.

From a young age, Owen always loved machinery and tractors. Even though he was surrounded by cattle growing up, his interest only really developed when he acquired his first pedigree animal in 2012. Breeding pedigree Limousin cattle is the main business for Owen’s parents Micheal and Ann. His sister Maria also had a few pedigree cows and was making some money from them. Owen decided to get in on the act, so he gathered together all his savings and after studying the different bloodlines purchased a Limousin x recipient heifer that was carrying a pedigree Limousin embryo sired by Wilodge Vantastic & a French dam called Etole.  On 16th December Owen received an early Christmas present when his calf was born and to his delight was a heifer which he called Meelickaduff Honda – “after the quadbike.”

Honda was shown at Elphin show in 2013 and won the Michael Dale cup for the champion calf along with being awarded the overall Limousin champion at the show. In the following two summers of 2014 & 2015 Owen and Honda continued to clock up the miles on the show circuit, collecting numerous titles along the way. During this time Owen became involved in the Irish Limousin cattle society’s YMA (Young Members Association).  The goal of the Irish Limousin YMA is to get young Limousin breeders interested and involved, in the various aspects surrounding breeding and showing pedigree Limousin cattle. It was through Owens participation in the YMA workshops at club and National level that he developed his showing skills. Owen is indebted to the many mentors, judges and breeders that have given their time along with imparting their vast knowledge to him.

The summer of 2016 had many highlights on the show scene with Honda having her most successful summer to date. This time round Honda’s first calf Lamborghini was in tow. Their first outing was to Newmarket on Fergus show Co Clare where they were crowned Limousin Champion. They also won championship titles in Charleville Co Cork, Rathdowney Co Laois, Corofin Co Clare, Mountbellew Co Galway, Castlerea & Elphin Co Roscommon

They say it’s a long way to Tipperary…. it’s a 250mile round trip from Meelickaduff to Clonmel to be exact however it was a very worthwhile trip as Honda took overall champion Limousin. She then went on to be crowned the overall supreme inter-breed champion of the show. This fantastic result made the long journey home a lot easier.

Another unforgettable day was Strokestown 150th Anniversary show, for many this is one of the highlights on the show scene with it being one of the last shows of the summer. Having had such a successful summer Honda continued her winning ways taking Limousin champion for the second year in a row, finishing a very enjoyable and memorable 2016 show season.

It is a great honour to have Meelickaduff Honda represent the Irish Limousin Cattle Society and Receive the RDS Champion of Champions Award for 2016. Both Eoin and the Irish Limousin Cattle Society would like to express their sincere gratitude to the RDS for their continued support. The Society would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the shows that participated along with the judges and stewards that officiated.
