South East Limousin Club Calf Finals and Open Day at Cillin Hill, Kilkenny Sunday 26th August 2012.

A very well organised event and friendly atmosphere saw a steady attendance all afternoon at the SE Limousin Calf  Finals and Open Day kindly hosted by Cillin Hill. There was a fine display of both haltered and unhaltered pedigree Limousin. Also on view was a display of crossbred heifers and bulls.

Judge Michael Pat Murphy was kept busy all day. In the show ring the Champion Bull went to John Kenny’s Carrefour General with Reserve to Tomriland Gemini, bred and exhibited by Noel Kenny.

Elite Gisele from Edward Tynan’s herd was crowned Heifer Champion with Tommy Daly’s Fairymount Havana Reserve Champion.

In the unhaltered classes top honours went to the Ardlea and Ballyquirke herds.

Well know beef commentator John Shirley from the Farming Independent was on hand to highlight the commercial aspects of beef breeding. He said world beef prices were at long last at realistic levels but in order to maintain high beef prices producers must maintain

  • a customer focus
  • ethical production methods
  • quality

He said the Limousin breed and limousin breeders were ideally placed in this regard, Limousin is a super breed both from a maternal and terminal perspective and breeders were encouraged not to loose focus on easy calving.

In selecting heifers for breeding the two things you are looking for are

  • Ability to calve
  • Production of a good calf/weanling
  • Farmers want a live calve with thrive.

Limousin is an ideal suckler cow type with length, a good pelvis, square shoulders, good feet and milk. In selection for breeding apart from functionality John always looks for length and loose skin.

Norman Stanley thanked all the exhibitors, organisers and Kilkenny Mart. All in attendance then partook in an excellent barbeque.
The next event on the South East calendar is a breeding heifer sale in Roscrea on Saturday the 29th of September.
