National Show Champion “Asheburn Intrepid” leads the way at October Premier Bull Sale

The final Premier Bull sale of 2014 took place on Bank Holiday Monday the 27th October at Roscrea Mart. A clearance rate of 70% met with an average price of €3,264. This saw the clearance rate increase by 13% from the May Premier sale with a corresponding €463 increase in the average price also.

Judge for this sale was Mr. Michael Priestley of the renowned Brontemoor herd based in Cracrop Farm, Brampton, Cumbria. Michael is the Honorary President of the British Limousin Cattle Society, he is an astute judge and has been involved in breeding Limousin cattle (both pedigree and commercial) for over 25 years.

Paul Sykes, Breed Secretary of the Irish Limousin Cattle Society commented after the sale “On offer here today was a catalogue of 139 bulls from 64 different sires. The Clearance rate was up from last years’ sale at this venue. Both Dairy and Suckler farmers were represented in the purchasers list here today, demonstrating that the breed is very versatile and capable of supplying the requirements to both farming types.

Some of the bulls on offer have been part of the “Limousin Show team” during 2014. Their breeders have showcased the breed at shows the length and breadth of the country and we as a breed are indebted to them. The Junior Champion and Senior Reserve Champion were both Champions in their respective classes at our National Show held in Tullamore.

The message coming from purchasers after the sale was their contentment with the breed due to its ability to produce very saleable cattle – from the young Friesian cross bred calf to the Cull cow. The breed continues to excel in both the marts and the factories.

I would like to wish the purchasers here today the very best with their acquisitions. As a society we recognise the substantial investment purchasers are making, therefore at today’s sale we held an all-inclusive draw – five sums of €500 cash-back. The draw took place after the sale and the lucky winners were: Ross Roycroft, Alan Geary, Martin Killeen, Michael Drumm and James Green.”

Leading the way at €9,400 was the striking Junior Champion “Asheburn Intrepid Et”. This 13 month old Wilodge Cerberus son was bred by Frank and David Byrne, Hodgestown Upper, Naas, Co. Kildare.
