Bank holiday Monday witnessed exceptional demand for pedigree Limousin cattle at the Irish Limousin Cattle Societies Premier sale. This sale was a combined bull and heifer sale and was held in our regular Premier sale venue of Roscrea Mart, Co. Tipperary. A clearance rate of 94% for bulls with an average price of €4649 while there was a  77% clearance for the heifers at €2959  – reflected the demand for quality Limousin genetics. The clearance rate for bulls was up from 70% at the corresponding sale in 2014, while the heifer clearance rate rose from 45%. Prices ranged from €2,500 to €14,000 for bulls, while heifer prices ranged from €1,800 to €4,650.

After the sale Paul Sykes, Breed Secretary said “This was a tremendous sale (the best many had witnessed here in Roscrea), with a terrific clearance rate. Our breeders put a huge emphasis on bringing the market the required livestock, and I am delighted that the breed had such a vote of confidence with the excellent clearance rate here today. Here in the society we realise the importance of herd health and with this in mind we have insisted that for Society sales all animals entered must be from herds participating in an Chechs accredited Johnes testing scheme.

Many of the bulls catalogued for this sale were sold at home prior to the sale, this is another indicator of the demand for Limousin bulls currently. It was heartening to see the wide geographical spread of customers here today. I wish all the purchasers of Limousin genetics the very best of luck with their acquisitions. Next up is our final sale for 2015, which will be held in Tullow mart, Co. Carlow on the 18th of November.”

As the sale encompassed both bulls and heifers, the show was split over Sunday evening for bulls and Monday morning for heifers. Tasked with the judging responsibilities was Ms. Kirree Kermode of the Orrisdale pedigree herd based in Ballasalla, Isle of Man. Kirree is chairperson of the Young Limousin Breeders Club (YLBC) in the UK, and has been actively involved in showing and more recently judging pedigree Livestock for a number of years. Her role as chairperson of the YLBC has given her the opportunity to encourage young Limousin enthusiasts from all over the UK. Speaking after judging here in Roscrea Kirree commented “The cattle here today were a credit to their breeders. There was an exceptional standard at the top end in each class. The temperament of these cattle is excellent. I was delighted to be asked to judge here and I thoroughly enjoyed the last two days here in Roscrea. I would like to thank all involved in the ILCS.”
