Irish Limousin genetics sought after for the Spanish market: Roscrea Premier Sale

Our annual October Premier Sale took place on Bank holiday Monday 31st October at Roscrea Mart. The sale had a catalogue of 209 top quality pedigree Limousin cattle, made up of 167 bulls and 42 females. The resultant clearance was 82% of bulls at an average of €4,161 and 62% of females at an average of €3,404.

Judge for this sale was Mr. John Mason of the Odd Acres herd based at Odd Acres Farm, Emsay, Skipton, North Yorkshire. Commenting on his experience of judging at this sale John said: “It was a great honour to be asked to be judge. I was extremely impressed with the overall quality and presentation of the stock on show. Some excellent bulls for both pedigree and commercial breeders alike".

George Candler and Denis Barrett auctioned the cattle. Before the sale got underway George called for a round of applause in memory of prominent Limousin breeder Dr. Roger McCarrick who passed away on the 10th of October. Roger was an exceptional cattle breeder, his Pelletstown herd is a household name. The herd has commanded a firm foothold in the Limousin herdbook since its foundation in 1975.

After the sale Paul Sykes, Breed Secretary of the Irish Limousin Cattle Society said: “Todays sale met with good clearance rates and good prices. It was great to see the reputation of Irish bred cattle is spreading on the global market with purchasers here from England, Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland, the Orkney Islands and for the first time from Spain. Our breeders, through their diligent dedication are constantly striving to supply the market with the cattle the market demands. I would like to commend them. As has been the case for all sales in 2016, all bulls at this sale sold under the Fertility Guarantee scheme. With a price range from €2000 to €11300 there was a bull to suit all budgets.

I would like to thank our Judge John Mason, our stewards Sarah McElligott, Clive Jennings and Freddie Valette, our auctioneers George and Denis. I would also like to thank the staff at Roscrea Mart.

2016 has been a tremendous year for the Irish Limousin Cattle Society, it is great to see Limousin cattle topping the weekly commercial sales rings. I would like to thank purchasers of Limousin genetics and wish them well with their acquisitions.”
