Irish Limousin Cattle Society sees strong demand and good clearance rates continue with May Roscrea bull sale

The spring sales of the Irish Limousin Cattle Society continued on Saturday 12th May at Roscrea mart. This Premier sale of 68 bulls saw a continuation of the trend that has been evident this spring at the Limousin sales with an 85% clearance rate. Prices ranged from a top of €8100 to €2500 and an average of €3770.

There was a real multi-cultural feel at the sale with interested parties from France, Wales, England and Scotland to supplement the very strong home interest that has been present all year at Limousin sales. Limousin being the all round breed was evident by the many differing types of farming enterprises represented by the list of purchasers (beef, suckler, finishers, dairy).

Breed Secretary Paul Sykes commenting on the sale said “while we may have not seen such a high average as the March Premier sale we still witnessed a strong demand with customers willing to dig deep for quality lots. The most pleasing aspect of our sales season to date is the high clearance rates recorded at all our sales. There is no doubt that there is a strong interest in the breed with many farmers wishing to invest in the breed. Easy calving being one of the prominent traits required, we must continue to strive to provide our customers with their market requirements. The industry recognises the fact that easy calving, milk and fertility are critical to maximising profit and we as a breed are equally conscious”.

Topping the Premier Sale was Woodview Gregory from the herd of long time breeder David Abbott of Killeshandra, Co. Cavan who had earlier in the day been awarded the Senior Champion by the judge Mr. Ken Jones from the Garnedd herd, North Wales.
