North West Limousin Club report May 2010:

The North West Limousin Club held its AGM in January and its outgoing officers were re elected with Tom Finnerty remaining as Chair and Michael Fox as Secretary. Tom Walsh is still in charge of the purse strings while Michael Gunn is PRO and travel officer. Donie McKeon and Pat Bruen are now the YMA coordinators.

Martin Ryan was our first guest speaker of the year and his talk on pedigree cattle breeding focused on fertility and feeding. It was one of the most informative talks we have had and all present picked up many ideas on how to improve their farms and their cattle.


The club will be running the successful points system for showing again in 2010. The eight shows that will count for points are Roundfort,  Ballina, Claremorris, Bonniconlon Swinford, Elphin, Strokestown and Ballinrobe. The classes are as follows:

  • 2010 Bull
  • 2010 Heifer
  • Bull born between 1/9/2009- 31/12/2009
  • Heifer born between 1/9/2009 – 31/12/2009
  • Bull born between 1/4/2009- 31/8/2009
  • Female born 1/1/2009 to 31/8/2009
  • Female born before 1/1/2009.

Points will be awarded at the qualifying shows with 3 points for 1st, 2 points for 2nd and 1 point for 3rd.

Our Calf championships return to Co. Sligo for 2010. Enniscrone show on the 28th of August will have six calf classes, three for bulls and three for heifers. Calves must be born after 1/9/2009. The classes will be divided into equal numbers after the entries have been received.


The club trip for 2010 is to the Royal welsh show in July. We will also be visiting two top farms while abroad. A group of fifty will be travelling form Knock on 18th July.


The North West will be holding their YMA workshop in Ballina Show on July 11th. This competition is open to young members aged from 12-25 and will comprise of  handling and showing sections. The top four will qualify for the North West team to compete in the All Ireland YMA finals in Bridgetown show Co. Clare on July 25th.

Entries accepted up to 11.30 in Ballina show with the competition starting at 12 noon.


The North West will be holding their annual commercial heifer sale in Castlerea in October. More details later.
