There was continued strong demand for Limousin bulls at the April instalment of the Kilkenny Agricultural Society’s Pedigree Bull Show & Sale, 2013. 24 bulls sold out of the 37 offered for sale, resulting in a sale clearance rate of 65%, with a sale average of €2,702, just €200 down on the average for the March Premier Kilkenny sale. Limousins were the highest price breed of the day, with a top price of €3,900. As an added incentive for the sale, there was a rebate of €100 to the highest priced buyer across each of the breeds, kindly put forward by Kilkenny Agricultural Society. For the pre-sale show, Limousins were judged by Trevor Ashmore, from Co. Wexford.
Champion on the day was ‘Farmleigh Guzzler’, property of Tom Swaine, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. This powerful bull is by Wilodge Vantastic, out of a Mas Du Clo dam, and went unsold as he failed to meet his reserve.
Top price of the day of €3,900 went to John Downey, The Rower, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny for ‘Thomastown Glenn’. This Ulys Mn son, out of an Ionesco cow, ‘Thomastown Dymphna’ has gone to the hurling home of Sean Reid, Ballyhale, Co. Kilkenny.
The second highest priced Limousin of the day was sold by Dan Tynan, Mountrath, Co. Laois, to Walter Murphy, Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary for €3,700. ‘Ardlea Genial’, which was placed first in his class, is by Emerson, out of a Tistou cow.
Sold for €3,650 was Oliver Byrne’s ‘Ballyquirke Ginger’, from Ballyquirke, Co. Kilkenny. By Mas Du Clo, out of a Grahams Samson dam, this bull placed third in his class, and was bought by Gabriel Moylan, Danesfort, Co. Kilkenny to run with his herd of suckler cows.
Reserve Champion ‘Laurastown Grand Duke’ was presented for sale by John Bambrick, Baurnafea, Castlewarren, Co. Kilkenny, and fetched €3,600 when knocked down to Martina Staunton, also from Castlewarren, Co. Kilkenny. ‘Grand Duke’ is by Newtown Bunty 1, and is out of a F3 Pharaon dam.
Ger Fenlon received €3,100 for his January born Sympa son ‘Barracks Harrison’. This bull is out of Milbrook Chassie, a Mas Du Clo daughter, and was bought by Pat Hennessy, Glenmore, Co. Kilkenny.
Four bulls sold for €3,000. The first of these was John Downey’s ‘Thomastown G-1099’. This Ulys Mn son, again out of an Ionesco cow, was bought by John Murphy, Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Waterford.
