Trade was slower at the April Kilkenny Agricultural Society Bull Sale when compared to the previous March sale, although there was a great clearance with 24 bulls sold out of 27 bulls offered, with the showing classes kindly judged by Ms. Teleri Thomas.

The top priced bull of the sale was Ballyquirke Elvis, owned and bred by local breeder Mr. Ollie Byrne, Ballyquirke, Gowran, Co. Kilkenny. This well muscled bull was sired by Mas Du Clo and is out of a powerful Lino daughter. He reached €3,000 in the sales ring when purchased by Mr. Conor Manogue, Ballycallan, Co. Kilkenny.

Three bulls sold for the next highest price of €2,500. Messrs. Pat & Gearoid Kennedy, Derryduff, Coolrain, Portlaoise, Co. Laois, sold both Coolrain Ed Mchawk and Coolrain Edward Mchawk at this price. The bulls were bought by Mr. Patrick Morrissey and Ms. Margaret Ryan respectively and were both sired by Molosky C Hawk. Also sold for €2,500 was Dan Tynan’s Ardlea Fabian. Sired by Tistou and out of a Ramses dam, he was bought by Mr. Pierce Landy.

The show champion was Galbally Eli, offered for sale by Mr. Trevor Masterson, Galbally, Ballyhogue, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. This stylish Fieldson Alfy son sold to Mr. Michael Martin for €2,450.

A number of bulls sold for €2,400. Mr. Garret Behan, Clonagowan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise, Co. Laois sold his third prizewinning Milbrook Tanko son, Cloonagh Excellent, to Mr. Pat Lonergan. Mr. Joe Maher, Ballyfoyle, Co. Kilkenny sold a Roundhill Botan 983 son, Parkhill Ernie, to Mr. John McDonald. Mr. Norman Richardson, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim, sold his second placed Ocean son, Ashtree Eddie to Mr. Alfred Wilson. Mr. Pat Beirne, Kilcock, Co. Kildare, sold his fourth prizewinning Tatar B son to Mr. John Dowling. Finally at this price, Mr. Dan Tynan, Mountrath, Co. Laois sold his third prizewinning Tistou son, Ardlea Eddie, to Mr. Patrick Tunstead.

The Reserve Champion of the sale, Templequain Fred, was owned and bred by Mr. Tom O’Shea, Rathdowney, Co. Laois. Sired by Lino, and out of a Jeansonnet dam he fetched €2,300 when he was knocked down to Mr. Denis Fitzpatrick. Also sold for €2,300 was fourth placed Finglass Eamonn, sold by Mr. John Compton, Cluen, Co. Tipperary. This Rocky son was bought by Mr. James Hickey.

The next Sale of pedigree bulls held by Kilkenny Agricultural Society, will be on May 25th, again in Cillin Hill, Kilkenny. With health status requirements of 90 day TB and Brucellosis testing, along with BVD virus negative testing a requirement also, this sale should continue to draw great interest from both dairy and suckler farmers alike.
