Kilkenny Agricultural Society Limited held their second Bull Show and Sale of 2016 on Wednesday the 13th April 2016 at Kilkenny Co-Op Livestock Market, Cillín Hill, Kilkenny. This sale had bulls from six different breeds – Hereford, Friesian, Simmental, Aberdeen Angus, Charolais and Limousin. There was an 100% clearance of the 16 Limousin bulls that were presented for sale, with prices ranging from €1,700 to €4,300 and an average price of €2971.

Auctioneer at this sale was George Candler, while carrying out the judging duties of the Limousin section was Garrett Behan, Ballyfin, Portlaoise, Co. Laois. The Irish Limousin Cattle Society sponsors the Limousin judging section at this show and sale.

A November 2014 born bull “Galbally Jacky” from the herd of Trevor Masterson, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford once again recoded the highest selling price (€4,300). Jacky is a son of Galbally Garfield, a homebred Ulys Mn sire, and Galbally Hotesse, a Galbally Danastic daughter. He boasts an array of five star ratings including a Terminal Index of €148 and a Replacement Index of €176.This very impressive bull commanded a lot of attention in the sales ring, however Mark Young from county Carlow was his eventual successful purchaser.

Also from Trevor’s Galbally herd came the show Champion “Galbally Jason”. Born in October 2014, Jason is an eye-catching son of Galbally Danastic and the Mas Du Clo daughter Galbally Eloisa. He carries five star ratings in Terminal index (€141), Replacement index (€139), Docility, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. Jason was snapped up by Thomas Crean, Gorey for €3,750.

Selling at €3,600 was “Dangan Joxer” from Michael Mahony, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. Joxer is a son of Michael’s renowned stock sire Roundhill Saturn (RHN) and Dangan Emily, a Dangan Viscount daughter. Michael purchased Roundhill Saturn at the Carwin dispersal sale and has proved to be a very shrewd investment. Joxer came to the ring with a Terminal index of €142 and a Replacement index of €129. William Byrne purchased Joxer for his herd based in Athy, Co. Kildare.

“Kiltorcan Jim Bob” also sold for €3,600 to Denis Curry, Co. Waterford. This 16 month old bull sold with a Terminal index of €115 and Replacement index of €132. Jim Bob is a son of Pacha 08 (PCH) and the homebred Galbally Darwin 1 daughter Kiltorcan Hope. Jim Bob was bred in county Kilkenny by Sean Reid, Ballyhale.

The Reserve Champion at this sale was “Ballyquirke King” from the Gowran, Co. Kilkenny based herd of Oliver Byrne. King is son of Emerson (S1052) and the Sympa daughter Ballyquirke Flora. He has five star ratings in Terminal index (€163), Docility, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. Lar Kenny, Durrow, Co. Laois bought King for €3,300.

An Ampertaine Commander (APM) son “Beechmount Kayne” was acquired by James Whelan, Hackettstown, Co. Carlow for €3,300. Kayne was bred by Geraldine Collins, Callan, Co. Kilkenny. He has five star ratings in Terminal Index (€152), Replacement index (€107), Carcass weight and Carcass conformation.

“Clonfad Jack” from Martin Cleary, Shinrone, Co. Offaly was purchased by Patrick Hennessy, Hackettstown, Co. Carlow for €3,100. Jack has Haltcliffe Dancer (HCF), Ionesco and Milbrook Tanko in his lineage.

Also selling at €3,100 was “Beechmount Jethro”, an Emerson (S1052) son from Geraldine Collins. Jethro has five star ratings in Terminal index, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. He was purchased by Edward Conway, New Ross.

“Cahergaul Jerry”, a Hauteclair (HCA) son realised €2,850 for his breeder James Fox, Burncourt, Co. Tipperary. Jerry has a Terminal index of €118 and a five star Replacement index of €90. Eugene Dunphy from county Waterford purchased Jerry.

Seamus Byrne, Roscrea, Co. Tipperary sold his bull “Carrig-A-Duff Jacko” for €2,800. Jacko is a son of Pacha 19 (BPH) and the Navarin daughter Carrig-A-Duff Emily. He was acquired by John Hassett, Co. Tipperary.

Michael Mahoney received €2,700 for his second bull “Dangan Jacob”. Also by Roundhill Saturn (RHN), Jacob has five star ratings in most traits. He was purchased by Michael Brennan, Rathdowney.

Ballyfoyle, Co. Kilkenny based Joe Maher sold “Parkhill Jared” for €2,600 to Bartley Bryan. Jared has Emerson (S1052), Ambitieux and Ideal 19 in his sire stack. He has five star ratings in Terminal index, Docility, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation.

The youngest bull on offer from Michael Mahony “Dangan Kaiser” was purchased by David Doyle, Gorey for €€2,550. Kaiser is a son of Roundhill Saturn (RHN) and the Dauphin daughter Dangan Teacher. He has five star ratings in most traits.

“Parkhill Jabulani” a Casmir (S1053) son sold for €2,200 to Joe Brennan, Castlecomer, Co. Kilkenny. Jabulani was bred by Joe Maher, Ballyfoyle.

“Carrig-A-Duff Jamie” sold for €2,100 to Declan Milner, Co. Offaly. Jamie has Haltcliffe Dancer (HCF), Meridien and Gaillard in his pedigree. Jamie was bred by Seamus Byrne, Roscrea.

Denis Holden, Kells purchased “Blackwater View Jack” for €1,700. Jack was bred by William and Ann Dorgan, Mallow, Co. Cork. His sire stack includes Rocky (ROX), Ballyline Alan and Jeansonnet.

The next multi-breed bull sale in Kilkenny is on Wednesday 18th May, 2016.

The Irish Limousin Cattle Society will host part of the International Limousin Congress in the environs of Cillín Hill: Friday August 26th sees the National Limousin show incorporating both Pedigree and Commercial cattle, while on Saturday August 27th the Parade of Champions, Elite Sale, Anglo Irish YMA and Gala Banquet will take place.
