The final Spring sale for the Irish Limousin Cattle Society for 2009 was held in Granard Mart on Saturday 30th May 2009 with a modest number of 25 males and 22 females being offered on the day. The pre sale show was judged by Mr. Noel Barry from Killasser, Swinford, Co. Mayo. 

Topping the days trade was the Male Champion, “Curraghree Diego” selling at €3,000 to Mr. Tom Duignan, Doohan, Athlone, Co. Westmeath. This February 2008 born bull was bred by Mr. Pat Phelan, Drumree, Co. Meath and sold as a calf to the herd of Mr. Herbert Crawford, Clones, Co. Monaghan. He was by Ronick Iceman and out of a Filsdaida cow, Luttrellstown Hattie. This five star bull was a prizewinner at many summer shows in 2008 and a maternal half brother to “Curraghree Colette,” a first prizewinner at the Beef Expo 2008.

The second highest price of the day went to Mr. Philip Crowe, Ballinagh, Co. Cavan for his second prize winning bull, “Powerful Dictator” selling for €2,600. This May 2008 born bull was by Ronick Hawk out of a Mas Du Clo daughter, Aube. Dictator boasted a high docility index of 126 and five star values for Suckler Beef Value, Weanling Export, Beef Carcass and Replacement Value. He was purchased by Mr. Fergus Turner, Ferns, Co. Wexford for his pedigree “Tomnaboley” herd.

Other notable prices included:

  • €2,200 to Mr. Dermot Rowe, Navan, Co. Meath for “Begsrieve Dude” by Millbrook Tanko.
  • €2,050 to Mr. Thomas Bailey, Batterstown, Co. Meath for “Baileys Dancing Brave” by Castleboy Viv.
  • €2,000 to Mr. Jane Patterson, Carrigallen, Co. Leitrim for “Drumgooland Del Boy” by Sable.

Topping the female trade at €2,650 was 3rd prize winner “Woodview Cathy” from Mr. David Abbott, Killeshandra, Co. Cavan. This November 2007 heifer was by Siam out of a Genial daughter, Clonmack Tamara. She was sold to Mr. Chris Shiels, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. This heifer was a half sister to a previous Granard Sale Reserve Champion in 2006, “Woodview Amy” and boasted five star ratings for Suckler Beef Value, Weanling Export, Beef Carcass, Milk and Fertility and Calf Quality.
