Elphin show was held in the mart grounds on Saturday August 31st. A large entry of over 50 Limousins competed in the Limousin classes which included the North West Calf championships for pedigree Limousins under a year old. These classes were confined to calves born in the North West club area which is made up Roscommon, Sligo, Mayo and Galway. The class winners competed for the Michael Dale memorial cup which is in honour of Michael Dale from Gort who was a leading member of the club and an enthusiastic Limousin breeder until his untimely death in May 2010.

Teleri Thomas originally from Wales but now living in Enfield Co Meath had the difficult job of judging the classes many of which contained prize winners from the national show in Tullamore.

The entries were listed in age order for the calf championship and then divided into three equal classes for males and three for females. After some intense competition young Roscommon breeder Owen Hestor from Castlerea Co Roscommon was judged calf champion with his Wilodge Vantastic heifer Meelickaduff Honda. Honda is an ET calf out of Donal Maloney’s prizewinning heifer Etole. Standing reserve was Anthony Donnelly’s September bull Donnelly Hernando. This Vantastic son had already won the junior male section of the All-Ireland Bull derby in Castlewellan in June and also was a class winner in Tullamore.

Meelickaduff Honda followed on her calf championship by winning overall limousin champion of the show sponsored by Ovaun Limousin with Erne Harriet as reserve. Erne Harriet is an April 12 heifer sired by Sylvandene Defoe and was shown by Crawford Brothers Clones Co. Monaghan. Indeed the Crawford brothers went on to win a very strong interbreed team of three competition later in the show with a team including Harriet and her sire Defoe. They received the Michael F Gunn memorial cup beating eight other groups including Simmentals, Charolais, Hereford and Angus teams in a class that was one of the highlights of the show.
