The All Ireland Derby competition was held last Saturday at Castlewellan show, Co.Down in the beautiful surroundings of Castlewellan Forest Park.

The All Ireland Derby Competition which is now in it’s seventh year is a cross border initiative between the Irish Limousin Cattle Society and the Northern Ireland Limousin Cattle Club which is open to exhibitor bred bulls and heifers.

The competition has always been a major event in the show calendar with many winners of the Derby going on to excel at future shows and sales with some achieving notable prices.

The judge on the day was well renowned breeder and long time show man Mr. Doug McBeath who runs the Springsett herd in Stirling, Scotland.

The first class in the competition bulls born between 1st January 2012  and 31st July 2013 saw a strong entry of 14 animals with the eventual winning position being awarded to Lynderg Hero from Jim Quail. This much admired animal which had previously taken the Male Championship at Balmoral show includes thirty years of Lynderg breeding, by the Guards Boomer son Lynderg Eisenhower who is by the French dam Java and Hero’s dam is Lynderg Diana a Haltcliffe Underwriter daughter by Lynderg Annabelle who  has breeding back to Tiara.

2nd place went to William McElroy’s Wilodge Vantastic son  Antanagh Houston. This smart 17 month old bull is by Goldies Sonia, a Bailea Olympe daughter.

Michael Loughran saw his entry Millgate Herbie taking 3rd place, Herbie is a son of his French stock sire Condor and by a home bred Mas Du Clo dam Millgate Doughnut.

The second bull class for animals born on or after 1st August 2012 had an entry of five animals

1st prize in this class went to another much admired entry  Donnelly Hernando Et from Anthony Donnelly, by Wilodge Vantastic and a Dauphin sired dam Newtown Trixie.

Standing second in this class was another Wilodge Vantastic son Carrowreagh Homer from Pat Bruen. This September born animal is by Carrowreagh Birdie,herself being a Cloughead Lord daughter.

Richard Duffy took 3rd place with Lanmore Hercules who has a pedigree which combines the AI sire Ardlea Dan  with the Mas Du Clo dam Lanmore Cora.

After the male classes the Male championships were decided with Lynderg Hero taking the title and Donnelly Hernando Et standing reserve.

The first heifer class for animals born between 1st June 2011 and 30th June 2012 had an entry of 8 heifers.

The red rosette in this section went to Elite Giselle from Edward Tynan. Giselle is a daughter of Wilodge Vantastic and by a French dam Uriel B.

Standing next to Giselle in 2nd place was W. McAllister’s Virginia Andy daughter Artnagullion Hanna who is by a Wilodge Vantastic dam Teeshan Evanoush.

3rd prize went to Derriaghy Hermonie from David Green,Hermonie’s sire is   Ampertaine Commander and her dam is Dinmore Elvira, herself a daughter of Wilodge Tonka.

The final class was for heifers born on or after 1st July 2012 and featured 9 entries.

Taking top honours in this class was the September born  Arnacrusha Hilarious from D Moloney. Hilarious who has already won many accolades so far this summer is another daughter of Wilodge Vantastic and by the French dam Etole who herself combines Omer Mn along with Neuf breeding.

2nd prize went to Edward Tynan with Elite Hope who again is by Wilodge Vantastic and the award winning dam Ardlea Coilte.

Edward Tynan also took 3rd prize with yet another Wilodge Vantastic daughter Elite Hazel who is by a Sympa dam Ardlea Eire.

The Female Championship then was judged and after some deliberation Doug McBeath tapped forward Ardnacrusha Hilarious to add another title to her list of achievements.

The final task was the announcement of the winners of the Derby Shield which went to the Northern Ireland Limousin Cattle Club on a score line of 43 v 40.
