Handsome son leads the way at annual Atheny sale
The annual Limousin sale in Athenry mart was held on Thursday the 13th April 2017. An average price of €3,223 was achieved with a clearance rate of 86%. Prices ranged from €1,900 to €6,800.
James Wycherley of the Barryroe herd judged the classes at this sale. Auctioneering duties fell to Denis Barrett. Stewards in Athenry were Sarah McElligott and Michael Gunn.

An outstanding Keltic Handsome (OKH) son – “Oldtown Kenny” - topped the sale in Athenry. Kenny was born in October 2017 to Oldtown Dolly, a Palmares daughter. He was bred by William Hogan, Thurles, Co. Tipperary. Kenny came to the ring with five star ratings in each trait, including a Terminal index of €146 and a Replacement index of €130. From the second Kenny entered the sales ring auctioneer Denis Barrett was inundated with persistent bidding, local farmer Tom Hession, Lisheenkyle, Athenry was the successful bidder for Kenny at €6,800.
The Reserve Junior Champion “Cloverhill Lorenzo” commanded a selling price of €4,900. Lorenzo is a 13-month old son of Haltcliffe Gunner (S1608). He was bred by Tom Walsh, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. Lorenzo came to the ring with five star ratings in Terminal Index, Replacement Index, Carcass weight, Carcass conformation and Daughter Milk. This eye-catching bull was purchased by Oranmore based Declan Higgins.
Senior Champion “Milbrook Kasey” was snapped up for €4,700 by Margaret Creavin, Corrandulla, Co. Galway. Kasey has Kaprico Eravelle (S2106), Rocky and Genial in his sire stack. He came to the ring with five star ratings in most traits, including Terminal index of €128 and Replacement Index of €108. Kasey was bred by William Smith, Oldcastle, Co. Meath.
Dairy farmer John Gibson, Kilrush, Co. Clare purchased the Reserve Senior Champion “Sliabh Felim Kenny” from Sean Ryan, Cappamore, Co. Limerick. Kenny is by Fieldson Alfy (S511) and out of Sliabh Felim Delia, a Mas Du Clo daughter. Born in September 2015, Kenny boasts five star ratings in Terminal Index, Docility, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. After a flurry of bids, John Gibson’s final bid of €4,700 secured this outstanding bull.
Also from William Smith was “Milbrook Klipper” a multi-starred Wilodge Fastrac (LM4052) son. Klipper’s dam Milbrook Emblem Et has Domino, Mas Du Clo and the renowned Milbrook Monique in her back pedigree. Sixteen month old Klipper has a muscle score of 122 and a skeletal score of 123. Klipper sold for €4,600 to Peter Mannion, Ballygar, Co. Galway.
Fifteen month old first prize winner “Meelickaduff Kingsman” was acquired by Gerry Costelloe, Athenry for €4,600. Kingsman is an eye-catching Wilodge Goldcard (LM4050) son. He has five star ratings in Replacement Index, Carcass weight, Carcass conformation and Daughter Milk. Kingsman was bred by Michael Hester, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon.
Pedigree breeder Bertie Mannion acquired “Cavelands Kieran” to run with his Ballyline herd based in Curraghboy, Co. Roscommon. Kieran is a son of Cavelands Eoin (Et) and Cavelands Heather, an Ionesco daughter. Nineteen month old Kieran has five star ratings in many traits, including Terminal index (€148) and Replacement index (€130). Kieran was bred by Paul Sykes, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo, €4,300 was the purchase price of this second prize winner.
Bobby Jones, Skerries, Co. Dublin received €4,300 for “Bremore Kavilire” a first prize winner. Kavilire is a son of the Bremore herd sire Hortensia and Bremore Far, a Cesar daughter. Kavilire has five star ratings in Terminal index, Replacement index, Docility, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. Flan Mullane, Kilmore, Co. Clare purchased Kavilire.
October 2015 born “Rathlee Kane” sold for €4,100 to John Staunton, Castlebar, Co. Mayo. Kane is by Wilodge Goldcard (LM4050) and out of the homebred Dauphin daughter Rathlee Alma. With an array of five star ratings, first prize winning Kane was bred by Daniel Kirby, Easkey, Co. Sligo.
Carrigdown Kifir by Roundhill Saturn Et (RHN) sold for €4,000. Kifir’s dam, Carrigdown Inka, has Nenuphar and Wilodge Tonka in her sire stack. Kifir was bred by Aidan Baker, North Circular Road, Co. Limerick. Martin Shaughnessy, Gort, Co. Galway purchased this first prize winning five star bull.
Michael Reynolds, Carrick On Shannon, Co. Leitrim received €3,700 for fourth prize winner “Bunnymore Kenton”. Born in September 2015, Kenton has Roundhill Saturn Et (RHN), Ampertaine Commander and Highlander in his sire stack. He boasts five star ratings in most traits. James Duggan, Claremorris, Co. Mayo purchased second prize winning Kenton.
“Milan Kestrel” a Derriaghy Enfield (S1288) son commanded a price of €3,700. Kestrel was bred by Donal McKeon, Enniscrone, Co. Sligo. Kestrel has five star ratings in most traits. He was purchased by Mark Curtin, Kinvara, Co. Galway.
Third prize winner “Cavelands Kid” was snapped up for €3,600. Kid has Brooklands F0959 (KJB), Castleview Casino and Mozart in his lineage. Kid has a Terminal Index of €135 and a Replacement index of €132, he was bred by Paul Sykes, Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo. Mountbellew, Co. Galway based Colm Finnerty purchased this 17 month old bull.
“Kilskeagh Kemah Et” also sold for €3,600. Kemah was bred by local breeder Patrick Gill, Athenry. He has On-Dit and Lino in his sire stack. Amy and P.J. McShane, Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan purchased multi-starred Kemah.
Martin Hansberry, Ballinasloe, Co. Galway received €3,600 from John Flynn, Ennis, Co. Clare for “Skehana Keano”. Placed fourth in his class, Keano is by Wilodge Enrico (WLZ). He has five star ratings in most traits, along with a muscle score of 139.
The Vagabond (S1046) son “Buckfield Larry” came to the ring with five star ratings in Terminal index (€166), Replacement index (€131), Carcass weight and Carcass conformation. Larry was bred by John Moore Jnr, Westport, Co. Mayo. Padraig Cunningham, Kilcogy, Co. Cavan purchased Larry for €3,600.
Fourth prize winner “Flaskagh Larry” was purchased by Ann Langan, Corballa, Co. Sligo for €3,400. Larry has Swarland Eddie (S1412), Roundhill Uron Et and Genial in his pedigree. Larry was bred by Michael Shally, Tuam, Co. Galway.
Eileen Hayes, Kilmihil, Co. Clare purchased “Mount Scott Lurcan” from Michael Sexton, Mullagh, Co. Clare for €3,400. Lurcan is a 14-month old third prize winning Emerson (S1052) son. He has five star ratings in Terminal index, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation.
The Swarland Eddie (S1412) son “Brickhill Ken” was acquired by Sean Fahy, Loughrea, Co. Galway for €3,300. Ken’s dam Brickhill Diamond Et has Mas Du Clo and Moustic in her back pedigree. Ken was bred by Michael McInerney, Cratloe, Co. Clare.
“Brooklands Kody” from the herd of Clive Jennings, Enniskeane, Co. Cork realised €3,300. Kody has Gamin (ZGM), Ballyline Uppie and Litron in his sire stack. With five star ratings in most traits, second prize winner Kody was snapped up by Michael Galligan, Carrickaboy, Co. Cavan.
The second bull on offer from John Moore sold for €3,300, “Buckfield Louie” has Wilodge Cerberus (WGE), Bailea Olympia and Jockey in his lineage. Noel Coffey purchased multi-starred Louie to run with his herd based in Athenry.
Michael Whiriskey, Craughwell, Co. Galway purchased second prize winner “Cloverhill Legend” for €3,200. Legend is a son of Lowerffrydd Empire (S1148) and the Goldies Terence daughter Cloverhill Harmony. Legend was bred by Tom Walsh, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.
“Millburn Khan” from the herd of Richard O’Beirne, Tuam, Co. Galway was purchased by Con McCaghey, Castleblaney, Co. Monaghan for €3,000. Khan is by Ampertaine Foreman (S1421). He came to the ring with five star ratings in Terminal index, Replacement index, Carcass weight and Carcass conformation.
€3,000 was top call for “Oldtown King” bred by William Hogan, Thurles, Co. Tipperary. King has five star ratings in many traits. He is a son of Newtown Festin and the homebred Finnahy Amigo daughter Oldtown Geraldine. King was purchased by Jarlath Geoghegan, Ardrahan, Co. Galway.
Frances Murphy, Kilcolgan, Co. Galway purchased “Bremore Kalamity James” a third prize winner. Kalamity James has Hortensia, Nenuphar and Pompier in his sire stack. He was bred by Bobby Jones, Skerries, Co. Dublin, €3,000 was his securing bid.
The Ramses (RMX) son “Sarsfield Kenneth” realised €3,000 for his breeder Matt Ryan, Pallasgreen, Co. Limerick. Kenneth has five star ratings in most traits. Joe King, Oranmore, Co. Galway purchased this second prize winner.
Fifteen month old “Mac's Choice Ken” also sold for €3,000. Ken has Elderberry Galahad (EBY), Sauvignon and Omar in his lineage. John Dillion, Loughrea, Co. Galway purchased third prize winning Ken from his breeder Thomas Burke, Claregalway, Co. Galway.
Ballyline Leo” from Bertie Mannion, Athlone, Co. Roscommon was crowned Junior Champion. Leo has Gleannari Everest, Sympa and Mas Du Clo in his sire stack. This yearling bull left the ring unsold having failed to meet his reserve.
