A packed ringside witnessed the Irish Limousin Cattle Society annual Athenry sale on Thursday the 14th April. This sale met with an 86% clearance rate and a price range from a top of €7,000 to €1,700. The average selling price was €3,291, up significantly from last year’s average of €2,720.

Judging at this sale was Michael Gunn of the Ovaun Limousin herd base in Elphin, Co. Roscommon. Michael commented: “Each class presented to me today contained quality bulls. Those at the top end were tremendous examples of the type of bull being sought for today’s market. I would like to wish both the breeders and purchasers here today every success with their Limousin cattle.”

George Candler performed the auctioneering duties.

Speaking after the sale Breed Secretary Paul Sykes said: “I was pleased with the sale here today, it is good to see Limousin bulls meeting with continued steady demand. Buyers had a good range of bulls to choose from and were selective in the type of animal they were purchasing, especially with regard to the requirements of the BDGP scheme. The bulls on offer here were prime examples of what the Limousin breed can produce. Due to good demand this year bulls are continuing to sell very well at home.

This year the society has introduced mandatory veterinary checks of all bulls presented at Society sales. This check is to fulfil the necessary criteria of the FBD Fertility Insurance scheme with the premium paid by the seller, this new requirement gives extra confidence to both the seller and buyer of Limousin bulls.

Anyone disappointed at not getting the bloodlines they require for their herd can contact the office at 025-85036 where we will do our utmost to facilitate locating their desired animal.

I would like to wish the purchasers the very best of luck with their acquisitions. Thanks to all here in Athenry mart for their help with this sale, thanks also to George, Michael and to Clive Jennings and Tom Finnerty for their invaluable assistance.”
