The third of the Irish Limousin Spring Sales took place in Athenry Mart, Co. Galway on Thursday 16th April 2009. This sale showed a great demand for quality bulls with 52 bulls being offered for sale on the day yielding an overall average of €2315. 

Topping the days trade at €3,600 was the Male Champion “Ballinscraw Cristiano” from the herd of John & Stephen Lynch in Ballinalee, Co. Longford. This September 2007 bull was by Carrefour Vanistreroy and a Soleil cow. He was purchased by Con Mullane, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick.

Next highest price came from Stanley Richardsons herd in Co. Leitrim for “Newtown Charlton (ET)” This Cloughhead Lord son was earlier placed first in his class by judge, Mr. Clive Jennings from Enniskeane, Co. Cork. This bull boasted 5 star traits for SBV, Weanling Export, Beef Carcass, Milk & Fertility, Calf Quality and also had a high docility index. He was purchased for €3,000 by Michael O’Neill, Crusheen, Co. Clare.

Following on from this was another first prizewinner, “Moneygold Crackatoa” from JJ Melody, Ennis, Co. Clare. This five star bull born in August 2007 was by Ballynerrin Victor out of an Eleazar daughter. He was purchased by Martin Murphy, Kilcolgan, Co. Galway for €2,900

Mark Clune from Feakle. Co. Clare received €2,850 for a November 2007 born bull, “Drominanou Con” by Pacha 19. He was purchased by PJ Hawkins, Craughwell, Co. Galway.

Other notable prices in the male section were:

  • €2,800 to Thomas Burke, Co. Galway for a May 07 bull by Malibu
  • €2,800 to Daniel O’Leary, Co. Clare for a December 2007 first prizewinning bull by Neuf.
  • €2,800 to Miriam Doyle, Co. Leitrim for a December 2007 bull by Ronick Iceman
  • €2,700 to Daniel Tynan, Co. Laois for a November 2007 bull by Nenuphar.
  • €2,650 to Thomas Joyce, Co. Galway for a January 2008 bull by Vivaldi.

A small show of heifers yielded an average of €2,000 with the top price going to the Champion female “Newtown Dolly” from Stanley Richardson, Co. Leitrim. This Mas Du Clo heifer was born in February 2008 and was sold to Tom Hession, Athenry, Co. Galway for €2,500.

The second highest priced heifer went to John & Stephen Lynch, Ballinalee, Co. Longford for their June 2007 heifer “Ballinascraw Chloe” She was by Navarin and scanned in calf to Wilodge Tonka and purchased for €2,000 by Con Mullane, Newcastle West, Co. Limerick.

The next Limousin event takes place on Saturday 9th of May in Roscrea for the Premier Sale.
